To go to Egypt on holiday

Sweatyslippers · 08/11/2023 01:04

Can’t decide whether it’s a good idea or not. Holiday would be to Cairo for all the touristy bits and a short Nile cruise over the Christmas break, just me and dp so no kids. Is it too high risk at the moment or am I over thinking it. Dp thinks we should go and have a good time, I’m not so sure

yabu: don’t be daft, go and enjoy yourself
yanbu: unsafe at the moment, better off going somewhere else

We just changed a cruise we were going on to Israel and Eygypt. Just too close to whats happening and there are other places to see

I would as long as you have very good travel insurance and check the status before you go.

I can't count the amount of places I've been just before, just after and during periods of conflict. Including Egypt just after the 2004 Sinai bombings.

I wouldn't go to Israel right now. But Egypt, yes.

Sweatyslippers · 08/11/2023 07:12

Definitely not going to Isreal or anywhere deemed unsafe by fcdo

I wouldn't. FCDO are advising against all travel to the Western Desert, there are lots of demonstrations taking place across Egypt at the moment at short notice, a drone has fallen recently in Egypt (into the red sea) and another somewhere else in Egypt, Egyptian police have also shot dead some Israelis in Alexandria. A handful of significant incidents, and tensions are rising fast.

It’s not somewhere I’d return to regardless. I’ve been to many many places in the world but Egypt has been by far the worst! I wouldn’t go at the moment even if it was nicer . If you do go, you’ll need lots of Imodium and rehydration sachets. And a really strong stomach.

limefrog · 08/11/2023 07:57

I wouldn't go.

cheezncrackers · 08/11/2023 07:59

Egypt is never particularly safe IMO, but it's currently less so. I wouldn't go, but then I'm fairly risk-averse when it comes to travel.

DH and I have a trip booked for 9th January. One night in Luxur, Nile Cruise, Aswan and 3 nights in Cairo. We won’t be going and will be losing £7.500 out of savings. It’s a killer, but not as much as being shot! I think the risk of terrorist attacks against Western Tourists (due to our Governments support if the slaughter in Gaza) is high and will only get higher in the foreseeable future.

kirbykirby · 08/11/2023 23:36

I wouldn't go for many reasons, especially the way they treat women.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/11/2023 23:36

I have never fancied it anyway so this has probably slanted my view.

I might go if I had it pre booked and couldn’t change it, even for a fee. I wouldn’t book it now. Seems too much of a risk, and there are many other places to go.
