Am I being too sensitive about comment my friend made?

Just spoke with friend on the phone and I mentioned about how my dad to help with some diy and she said “you’re poor dad, he’s practically on his deathbed”

This was in reference to his age (early 80s), he’s physically absolutely fine. Like it’s a reality I try not think about … it just felt so cold to just make a comment about my dad dying.

Yes you are being unreasonable to be annoyed about this.

junbean · 07/11/2023 18:03

It's an awful and insensitive thing to say, I'd be upset too.

Elephanta · 07/11/2023 18:03

Sorry, I do think you’re being unreasonable. At worst it’s a clumsy joke in poor taste. It wouldn’t upset me.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 07/11/2023 18:04

It's probably something they said without thinking very hard. Hopefully they're embarrassed about it but I wouldn't think they intended to upset you.

I think this too.

Poppyseed14 · 07/11/2023 18:07

It's a pretty shitty thing to say OP. I wouldn't like it either xx

That’s not very nice.

junebirthdaygirl · 07/11/2023 18:10

Was she saying your dad is too old to be called in for DIY projects? I wouldn't be upset about the dying bit but would be thinking am l being unfair to dad.

Cotton55 · 07/11/2023 18:11

It was an insensitive way to put it.
But I presume what she meant was "are you really going to ask your very elderly father to come over and do some DIY?!" Maybe she feels it's mean to ask such an old man?

My own FIL loved pottering around fixing stuff in his daughters houses right up until he died in his late 80's. He enjoyed it and was well able healthwise.

Dacadactyl · 07/11/2023 18:13

@junebirthdaygirl and @Cotton55 have got it. That's what your friend meant.

Mosaic123 · 07/11/2023 18:17

It was in pretty poor taste as a joke.

She is probably envious that you have family help.

Fionaville · 07/11/2023 18:18

Yes, the reference to his death was insensitive.
Although I do worry about my father of similar age. He's still capable of DIY, but gets out of breath. It doesn't stop my sister getting him up to her house, to do all her DIY. He gets home bruised and exhausted.
She doesn't care that he's old now and shouldn't be doing it. He won't say no, because of his pride.

LittleMooli · 07/11/2023 18:18

Weird thing to say

penjil · 07/11/2023 18:24

It was bloody rude and I'd have said to her "What do you mean?!?"

SweetBirdsong · 07/11/2023 18:26

Probably meant a a joke, but it was a bad one. Very poorly worded! YANBU.

Same. Make her explain.
My dad was capable of DIY at that age. If he wants to help, why not?

Ulysees · 07/11/2023 18:28

She's weird

Justleaveitblankthen · 07/11/2023 18:36

It smacks of jealousy to me.
Why didn't she praise him for being of sound mind and body and obviously happy to keep busy? 🤔

Does she have form for these types of comments?

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 07/11/2023 18:42

Has she no filter at all, horrible thing to say and so insensitive. What is wrong with people to think this is ok to say to someone.

Once your dad enjoys helping you out that is great.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 07/11/2023 18:49

That was not a nice thing to say. If she meant you shouldn't be asking your dad to do DIY because he's elderly, than that's what she should have said. Saying he's on his deathbed is horrible.
