to not pay this hairdresser?

I do my hair myself. Very occasionally I'll feel that something is outside of my ability and will go to a salon.

Went to a really well regarded salon + stylist last week. Guy has huge insta following, pics of gorgeous colours etc. Loads of good Google reviews.

I went in with level 8/9 blonde hair (had stripped copper colour out) and told him that my hair was resistant at the roots and porous on the ends. I wanted a root smudge in a level 7 blonde and and my mid-lengths and ends either toned to a less brassy blonde or maybe a tiny hint of a pink/rose in the blonde but emphasised I wanted blonde.

I ended up with a too dark flat muddy brown all over and a DARKER pink on the mids and ends. So the fucking reverse of a root smudge.

I told him how unhappy I was and that I felt I'd come in with a great blank canvas blonde and left with something that in no way reflected what I had asked for.

He charged me for the trim but not the colour. Said that it will lighten and that if I get in touch in a few weeks I can go back to have it "fixed" and he'll charge me at that point. He didn't apologise and tried to blame it on my hair type (which I had fully explained to him).

I have zero intention of going back and am in fact sat here with colour remover on my head as I hated what he did so much.

AIBU to not contact him?

You don't need photos Hmm

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 07/11/2023 09:57

OP, YANBU, don't go back. You shouldn't have paid for the cut either.

I would send him a bill for reversing his work to go back to blonde.

ShitHairSheila · 07/11/2023 10:00

I don't have after photos as have been dodging cameras, mirrors and people since having it done!

We need a photo to see!

Catza · 07/11/2023 10:05

Yes, you should have contacted your stylist. Now you put colour remover on your hair, he is no longer liable to offer you any remedial work.

OP clearly said she doesn't want to go back.

I've had this before and it is very upsetting. Stylist also offered to 'fix' it but I didn't want them touching my hair again.

CaribbeanCupcake · 07/11/2023 10:09

I defo wouldn't go back- I wouldn't trust he wouldn't mess it up for a second time 😩

ShitHairSheila · 07/11/2023 10:10

@Catza I don't want any remedial work from him! I wouldn't trust him to trim my fringe at this point!

I bet it's not as bad as you think.

Gifgirl · 07/11/2023 10:11

Ps, really sorry this happened. It's upsetting.

ScattyHattie · 07/11/2023 10:17

Not sure if his explanation maybe true but I don't think I'd trust him to do remedial work either as didn't listen to brief to end up with the darker pink shade rather than rose, sure that would fade lighter in time but not sure on roots. It sounds like you know fair bit about hair colouring and what works with your hair type.

Gifgirl · 07/11/2023 10:20

Also, the fact that you have to PAY him to fix his mess makes me laugh!

Mindymomo · 07/11/2023 10:20

Hair colouring is difficult to get correct first time especially if your hair is already coloured. I’ve stuck to same hairdresser for over 20 years as she knows my hair. What do other people think of your hair. Agree we need photos to see if the colouring is awful as you think.

NorthernSpirit · 07/11/2023 10:31

You do didn’t pay for the colour (which you aren’t happy about).

He offered to ‘fix’ the colour once it had settled.

You paid for the cut - which you haven’t complained about.

YABU - not sure what else you want?

She has to PAY HIM TO FIX IT.

To be honest you sound like a nightmare client.

You think because you know technical terms and you dye your own hair that makes you an expert. But unless you're missing out the fact that you're actually a trained hairdresser then you don't know what is realistic or achievable.

If he didn't take you as light as you wanted them my guess would be that your hair wasn't in the condition to do so. Hairdressing isn't an exact science and you can never 100% guarantee a certain outcome.

He's already worked on you once for free, at some point he needs to be paid if you're expecting to go back again.

People don’t know what is achievable when they aren’t a level 8/9.

At a level 9 you can do anything. There’s no colour in your hair left so there was no reason OP should’ve left with the ends anything but platinum.

ShitHairSheila · 07/11/2023 11:14

@Meeting 1. there was zero lightening involved so that's not an excuse and 2. a nightmare client for explaining clearly what I wanted and refusing to roll over and accept something totally different that didn't even look nice?
