to return gift bought for a friend I think may be dumping me

I think i'm being quietly dumped by a friend and think I should return the expensive present i've bought

DF was planning a big birthday party and had asked people to save date for a year
Shortly before the big day there was a problem with the venue and event was cancelled
DF resisted attempts to arrange an alternative and on the day celebrated with family
I was invited to join that event, but then uninvited because of space

I'm not really sure if DF was just caught up in excitement and didn't think anyone would feel put out, or deliberately trying to create a distance

I've barely seen them since and now I'm wondering if it would be better to return the gift because it all just feels too awkward now.

Oh yes, don't give her a gift if she uninvited you and hasn't really been in touch since!

Return it. If the relationship improves you can always repurchase.

How long has it been since the birthday? I'd go with returning it and if the relationship improves again maybe treat them to a lunch out somewhere .

I only give friends gifts if I see them on their birthday or go to their party so I would definitely be returning and feeling a bit miffed
