My hair extensions are gone and i want to cry

I had tapes in since august, but I got them taken out for a few reasons:

  • a change in circumstance meant I could no longer afford the frequent maintenance, and they needed a lot
  • they had changed colour in the sun and looked mismatched to my roots
  • they were becoming ratty and knotty all the time
  • they took ages to dry
  • they were damaging my thin fine hair

I got them taken out and my god. My hair has become so thin and short (literally barely shoulder length) it looks gappy and horrible and honestly I want to cry my eyes out. I know getting new extensions is not a financial option right now, but I looked SO much better with them and I’m genuinely struggling so much. I don’t know what to do 😭 it’s literally either damage my hair further and become poor, or look this ugly!!!

AIBU to not want to settle for either of these?!

That’s unnecessary. You do realise that some people can feel very self conscious about their appearance AND worry about people living terrible lives at the same time don’t you? I doubt if anyone would feel bright and breezy if their hair looked awful.

Weird response

I went through an over bleaching with extensions stage it fried my hair. I would think it's more that your hair isn't healthy enough to hold the weight rather then the extensions doing damage unless they've been poorly fitted. O ne day I just cut it all and started repair on it. I wear wigs now and this works for me. My hair is growing back healthily however general age thinning means I'll continue to use wigs until I can switch to clip ins . If it is causing damage to your hair chances are your hair isn't suitable especially for tape ins. Option - 1 get a nice decent wig and give your hair nothing but tlc.
Option 2 nano rings can be used to fill out where you need and less weighty option 3 clip ins . Strongly suggest going the wig route or your hair may reach a point of not actually being able to use extensions

Why so mean and sarcastic?

I think the OP is allowed to worry about more than one thing at the same time - just because she is currently upset about her hair doesn’t mean that she lacks compassion and empathy for people who are suffering.

Or do you never worry about the trials and tribulations of your everyday life but just exclusively devote yourself to worrying about the plight of those in war zones and refuge camps? How very high-minded of you!

LittleMooli · 06/11/2023 06:43

Heya, you made the best choice. Sounds like they've really damaged your hair. Try and be really kind to it for a couple of months then go get a cut

Ostryga · 06/11/2023 06:46

Get a u-shaped clip in wig. Take 5 mins to put in, you can have your hair blended into it at the hairdressers and they are amazing.

I have bald spots from scalp psoriasis and this covers them and looks so natural no one can tell when I have it in.

biscuitnut · 06/11/2023 06:47

I had extensions for a while and honestly my hair was shocking after. It took a good 12 months of me babying it for the thickness to come back. Seriously take care of your own hair. It will come back but if you keep having extensions you get trapped in a cycle of having to get them because your hair gets thinner and thinner over time.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 06/11/2023 06:47

Get a cool and funky short haircut, extensions aren't great anyway

Agreed. Tapes mostly look revolting - you can always see the tape, it's very distracting.

Focus on how ratty you said it was looking before - I bet it doesn't look as baf as that!

Sierra26 · 06/11/2023 07:03

Get a topper piece. It’s not a full wig, but similar. Then let your natural hair recover

You’ve managed to be both unkind and pompous!

I starting taking biotin (from Amazon) and my nails and hair are much stronger. Really cheap too.

Jewelspun · 06/11/2023 08:23

Hair topper would be ideal for you.

ianshe · 06/11/2023 08:46

Bobs are VERY chic right now (always have been imo)
Embrace it !

BookishBabe · 06/11/2023 17:42

Wigs are a really good option.
I had to shave my head 6 months ago after trying to bleach my own hair blonde and all my hair falling out.

I have a few decent human hair wigs for every wear and a few cheaper, brighter synthetic hair ones.

I put them on myself in the morning and have taught myself with YouTube videos.

It's worth a go.

ToadOnTheHill · 06/11/2023 17:45

No reputable stylist would fit them now if your hair is in poor condition so keep that in mind if you go looking for someone cheap.

Short haircut and perhaps a wig when you can afford it.

I hate my hair for similar reasons so I do sympathise. I am considering a doctors appointment xx

Minty2023 · 07/11/2023 16:11

Tapes are very bad if you have weak fine hair. Go to a reputable extensions salon like Hadley Yates and have a consultation. They can trim the damage and put in a few bonds to give you volume and advise you on maintenance and help you grow it out. But get your ferritin checked and keep your diet on point. Hair doesn't grow if it's under 50.
