DS18 and his friends are keen. You get over £4000 for a 2 week stay. Has anyone done it and how poorly are you? They make it sound very easy for people who are happy indoors on the internet

No that's a cold. Proper influenza is very distinctive and much more rare than a nasty cold.

I know it's a common myth that people believe and it's really hard to persuade people otherwise, but scientific tests on people with very general cold symptoms show that their symptoms are fairly often caused by a flu virus - so often that most of us have flu every few years.

3/4 of flu infections have no symptoms at all in fact. That's why it is able to spread so easily.

I had proper flu once in my life when I was in my mid twenties. My parents had to come and scrape me off the floor of my house, bundle me into a car and take me home. I was off work for weeks and a friend used me a month later to assess whether a disabled friend could access a potential wedding venue as I was so weak and pathetic. It was over the few days surrounding the millennium and I literally have no memory of that at all, I was so out if it. Fit healthy 25 year old with no underlying conditions and very rarely unwell before or since. Covid was a breeze in comparison. I would never willingly be infected. I guess it’s a bit like Covid in that there are viral factors and host factors that make it unpredictable who’ll be badly affected.

It also means that if you are one of those 'I never get flu' people you've probably been infecting people with flu for years - yuck!
