Is Vaping a lot more safe than cigarettes?

I'm ignorant about this, but is vaping definitely much more safe than cigarette smoking? Are there any good recent studies?

I remember the "popcorn lung" side effect was debunked as not to do with vaping a few years ago, and it seemed like it was nowhere near as damaging as cigarettes. Is this still a general consensus?

Public Health England estimate about 5% as harmful as smoking.

At the moment with the available evidence to date. I guarantee you in 10 years that statistic will be vastly different.

Delymoz98 · 16/01/2025 13:18

I think when it comes to vaping vs smoking, it’s not an easy call. Sure, vaping doesn’t have the same harmful chemicals as cigarettes, so it’s probably safer in the short term. But there’s still a lot we don’t know. We don’t have long-term studies yet, and there’s a chance things could change as more research comes in. I think in 10 years, like you said, we might see a different picture, depending on what new data comes out. I’d say if you're trying to quit smoking, for e-cigarettes might help, but the safest bet is always to quit both if possible.

There's been plenty of studies and lots of data and they've pinpointed the exact ingredients that cause vape lung. Of course it's just as bad if not worse. Anything you burn and inhale is going to be carcinogenic.

Genuinely interested, which studies are you referring to?

For starters, you don't 'burn' anything.

Quite a statement, based on what?

20 years is nowhere near long enough to determine long-term health effects.

Of course it is.

Have just read NHS England had 11 Nursery age children admitted to hospital in 2023 due to using vapes. Who the fuck gives a toddler vapes ?

RobertaFirmino · 16/01/2025 16:25

I'd urge any cigarette smoker to make the switch. The sooner you ditch the cigs for good, the better. Refillable pens are freely available, nobody needs to rely on disposables. Best case scenario, your health will improve. Worst case is early death which would have happened anyway because of the cigs. Either way, you'll have more money.

Vaping makes me cough uncontrollably. Smoking doesn't. I've really tried to switch to vapes.

Tessasanderson · 16/01/2025 17:08

If you want to see what kind of shite vaping is leaving in your lungs go to a friend who vapes in the car. Then wipe your finger on the inside of the windscreen and see what comes off.

A family member was complaining about their car always steaming up regardless of temp and air con blaring. Blamed it on everything except the vaping. Only when he got a new windscreen fitted did he realise his windscreen (and lungs) were coated in a sticky film of gunk that didnt shift.

I hate to think of the mess these people are going to be in the future. But dont worry, nothing has been proven yet......

I mean I imagine they've picked them up
Off the floor, out a bin in the home, from a pocket.. not that people are actually giving them vapes

The sheer cost of fags means it’s impossible to have more than a couple a day - I doubt there are 20 a day faggers any more. On balance I’d say a vaping is probably worse if you’re hitting it hard.

Oioisavaloy27 · 16/01/2025 17:11

They say it's better however my uncle used to vape but had never smoked and he didn't half have a smokers cough.

Katherineryan1986 · 16/01/2025 17:25

Today there is the sad news that actor Paul Danan (Hollyoaks) has dies from lung complications caused by "excessive vaping". He was 46.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/01/2025 17:31

Mmm, papers are reporting that Danan recently was hospitalised as a result of vaping, and has sadly died, but also that he has a long, and recent, history of cocaine and cannabis use - so much so he was due in court today on drugs and driving charges.

I suspect the obsessive use of anything, plus a long history of smoking and snorting drugs has more to do with it than just the vape! But lets not let common sense or facts get in the way of a headline eh!

But 100% more dangerous than not vaping.

I always have my vape in my hand when I drive. I have no issues at all with any residue or steam, certainly not to any noticeable degree. I absolutely don't need to clean anything from the windows.

I've also vaped in this one spot at home for years now. I've just run my finger over the wall behind me - it's spotless.

I don't doubt there's some particle residue about the place, but sticky gunk? Sorry, no.

OrangeKettle · 16/01/2025 19:15

I started vaping over a year ago. I can go a week without one (but it’s hard). Really want to stop cos I’m so scared of what I’m doing to my body.

Cigarettes were easier to stop.

I did also get the dirty windscreen a pp said about.

Guy in front of me just before Christmas bought 200 fags it cost him £235, i nearly fainted.
