To be opposed to our government supporting a far right government with no viable plan going forward?

Throughout history we have seen extreme ideologies lead to many disasters.

Our government is allowing the continued murder of a captured, civilian population in Palestine by refusing to endorse a ceasefire with no viable alternative.

I watched this interview with a former IDF soldier and it struck me that no other current leader has focused on the long term resolution of the distressing killing going on in the region. It was refreshing to see some thought and consideration for the rights of people on both sides, other than the usual lines trotted out (e.g. Israel has the right to defend itself) to defend the actions of a right wing government who's own media is critical of policy and action that has led to recent devastating developments.

AIBU in expecting our government to consider viable, balanced strategy as opposed to blindly following the U.S.? If a former soldier can do this then why can't politicians have similar conversations?

Israel-Hamas war: Ex-Israeli soldier says 'this government can't defeat Hamas'

Sky's Mark Austin has spoken to Gaza War veteran Benzi Sanders who said "Hamas is stronger" even though they "had dealt them a decisive blow". The ex-Israel ...

1400 Jewish children women and men died in an horrific terrorist attack. I am all for a viable two state solution which respects everyone's rights, but there will be no peace with Hamas still in existence.

Out of interest what do you think would happen if the little old UK called for a ceasefire?

Best they can do is support the ground invasion but stress international law is followed and hopefully be brave enough to point out instances in which it isn't.

We are not a major global player in n this and no one gives a shit what the UK thinks at the end of the day.

Mrsfussypants1 · 27/10/2023 19:04

The uk will stand by whatever US says. They'll probably have a polite word when Gazas death total reaches 10,000. Netanyahu won't listen. I know he lost a lot of popularity with Israelis before this seige. I honestly don't think they will be able to wipe out Hamas, they will probably have to destroy all of Gaza to get rid of the tunnels. Goodness knows what will happen next, will their neighbours step in? And if they do who will send troops to back up Isreal?

Mrsfussypants1 · 27/10/2023 19:13

Saying that the voices in parliament are really growing louder calling for a ceasefire and disagreeing with Sunaks unwaving support.

The uk will stand by whatever US says.

Exactly, why do people struggle to understand this?

duchiebun · 27/10/2023 19:19

Also the whole war on terror makes us a tad hypocritical.

MrsFinkelstein · 27/10/2023 19:24

How much do you think Hamas listens to the UK PM?

Did you see the Hamas leader getting interviewed by the BBC? Walked out after being (v gently IMO) being questioned about the justification for 1400 civilians being murdered.

There was a ceasefire on 7/10, Israel had been abiding by it since May. What assurances will Hamas give that they will actually abide by a new ceasefire agreement?

As Hamas is still firing hundreds of missiles from Gaza into Israel every day - do they plan to stop using fuel and resources for munitions and start supplying fuel and food to their citizens?

Mrsfussypants1 · 27/10/2023 19:30

There won't be peace for either side with the current leaders of Palastine or Isreal.

Chicaontour · 27/10/2023 20:12

International military law has already broke numerous times by collective punishment punishment & weaponising water.

Chicaontour · 27/10/2023 20:15

The video highlights that the idea of hamas will grow even if their ground troops are wiped out. Then the next generation are born to be cannon fodder and the cycle contine. So freaking sad and the hypocrisy sickens me. My heart goes out to ordinary Palestinians and israelis

Mrsfussypants1 · 27/10/2023 20:18

The only winners will be those who have shares in the US weapons manufacturing. Its so bloody wasteful of precious life.

Absolutely agree

Look to how the Israeli government came to power (through voters voting for very right wing parties who have absolutely no interest in Palestinians being prosperous and improving their lives) and the government allowing the building of further settlements on the West Bank, the attacks from government forces that had killed many Palestinian children this year alone, the devolvement of the powers of the supreme courts (basically allows the government to act as they please)

the hatred is not one sided as it’s it so often portrayed that it’s only some Palestinians who do not want to share the land who do not want Israel to be peaceful it’s both sides where you have a sizeable number of the population that feel this way but only one is powerful and has the west backing
