How to talk to an ex in small town

I just moved back to my home town. I last lived there eight years ago.

I have one ex that lives in the town. We had a particularly bad break up.

Anyway I had forgotten all about him till I moved back.

Now I've bumped into him several times.

The first time we bumped into each other, he kind of moved one way, and I moved another way into a shop, so that we could avoid each other.

The second time we bumped into each other on the street we both looked at each other and looked away and didn't say anything. But it was so awkward. He seemed to not know whether to say hi, and I didn't know either ap we just walked past each other

Im starting to stress walking round the town as I don't know what to say to him if I bump into him.

How to make it easier?

I just don't know what to do in this situation. Do I say a friendly hi to someone who I had a really big argument with 8 years ago, when I see him now.

What would you do

You'd forgotten all about him. Don't overthink it. I would probably treat him as a stranger and give a polite smile as I held open a door, etc. Or a 'morning' as I passed in the street. But only what I'd do to anyone else I didn't know.

I live in a small town.

How long were you with him?
