Will I get into trouble for this near miss?

I really messed up tonight. I almost hit a car when entering a mini-roundabout. I thought I had checked it was clear, and I just don’t understand how I didn’t see them coming. Then to make matters worse I went to hit the brakes but ended up hitting the accelerator instead (automatic), and very nearly went crashing into them. They stopped and remained stationary for a minute. I was anticipating them getting out to shout at me or something but then they just drove off. I am genuinely mortified at myself for being so careless and intend to take some refresher lessons with my old driving instructor. I am aware that I don’t have to report a near miss but I’m paranoid they’ll report me for careless driving? AIBU to feel worried about this?

That’s not how it works. They couldn’t prove what happened anyway - they’ll just drive Home swearing about you and get on with their lives.

A local mini roundabout is linked to a slightly bigger one. I always check really carefully before pulling onto the roundabout. I had to slam the brakes on because of a lad on a bright red motorbike who had right of way. I have NO idea how i didn't see him. He carried on and I sat in shock for a few secs before moving put of everyone's way.
That happened 15+ yrs ago and I still feel sick when i recall it. It just made me more aware especially for bikes.

You won't be in trouble. It's a none event, but if youre like me you will remember it!

Nothing more will come of it. Just forget it now. Its obviously not a regular occurance for you and I'm sure you'll be extra careful at roundabouts now. I wouldn't think you'd need any refresher lessons just because of that.

Aw don't worry about it!! Change your self talk to - wow I am a great defensive driver! I did exactly what I should have done to avoid an accident. Stop tearing yourself down!

They will have called you every horrible name under the sun, got home and probably talked about the dick head on the roundabout, then more than likely forgot about it later on.

I'm an advanced driver with over 30 years experience and used to tutor people for their advanced test. I really screwed up on a roundabout in East London last year and almost smacked into a brand new, very expensive BMW M4, at that point to him, I was a "fucking wanker" if I read his lips correctly. 😁

Don't worry about it, we all make mistakes.

Wow! If the police visited everyone who had a near miss they'd never do anything else! Use it as a learning experience and move on IMO, don't sweat it. I was driving in another country this summer and nearly hit people on a roundabout 2 times in a week! And I've been driving 30 years 😳

Teegan89 · 24/10/2023 11:49

Thank you. Still feeling shitty but at least I’m less paranoid about the police showing up at my door 😅

bless you, there are not many young drivers who would admit their mistake! I would assume no one was injured and no damage occured? I'm sure your ears will be have been ringing from the abuse you will have received for a while.. but you are only legally obliged to report a road traffic collision when there is injury or damage within 24 hours. any report of dangerous driving reported to the police has to be supported by a independant witness and or dash cam footage.. maybe dont be so hard on yourself, even those of us who have been driving many many years make mistakes at times...

I do worry about how naive some drivers on here seem to be.

Poppydieu · 24/10/2023 15:53

I once had to slam my brakes on at a roundabout. Totally my fault.
My tyre marks were still there next day.
Nothing happened though.

In what way?

Me too. I never knew there were so many paranoid, nervous, anxious drivers about until I read Mumsnet.

Explains a lot.
