Is this normal for a one year old? And what will nursery do?

My ds hates having his baby changed. He is one so can easily move around and when I am changing him he will often reach down and put his hands between his legs and touch the contents of the nappy (he has lose stools). He then has it on his hands and everywhere else. I am at my wits end, it makes me so stressed and I don’t know how to stay calm. I worry about cleanliness and try and wash his hands afterwards but what will nursery do? Will they have time to do this? I worry it will make him ill. Sorry if this seems ridiculous, I can’t explain how strong he is and how exhausting it is trying to keep him still. I’ve tried all distractions which used to work, he isn’t interested anymore.

Chances are he will behave very differently at nursery. At home, lay him on the floor and put your legs over his arms to pin him down.

@Jewelspun thanks I have tried this and it used to work but now he struggles out of it!

Muslin on lap, baby with legs pointing towards your dominant hand, left arm over stomach area blocking arms, with left hand holding legs up, cleaning with your right. One pinned down baby who can't reach the poo. Perfectly normal behaviour as having your bum changed is boring when there are so many other exciting things to do.

You can also let them play with something they wouldn't normal be allowed to, such as car keys, or TV remote control with batteries out.

Nursery will manage fine, they'll be more than used to little Houdinis .

Pull ups instead of nappies so you can change him standing up (if he can stand)

I did stand up nappy changes only at that age. Harder to get everything fully clean but a lot easier than holding down a wriggling baby.

My baby struggles loads and I find it easier now if I have his head by me instead of his feet and lean over him. Not sure why but works for me.
