To go to Egypt when 5.5 months pregnant

We booked a holiday about 6 months ago for next year. It is all inclusive and rated a 5* hotel with 4.9 score on google and 4.6 on trip advisor. I've since found out I will be pregnant when we are there.

However ever since I told people I was going to Egypt (pre pregnancy) people keep warning me not to drink the water, have ice in drinks, eat salad etc. I was willing to take the risk before pregnancy but now it is worrying me. The reviews of the hotel mention food poisoning maybe a few times a year and generally tend to say women who were pregnant there were treated like queens, which is nice to see.

Would I BU to cancel the holiday/ swap to somewhere else (at quite a lot of extra cost). Or is this outdated information/ does it mainly only apply if you're out and about rather than just staying at a hotel? Am I worrying unnecessarily?

Considering the situation right now I wouldn’t consider going to Egypt at all right now or in the near future.

HTruffle · 23/10/2023 10:20

personally I would absolutely not go on that holiday.

hellohellothere · 23/10/2023 10:20

I wouldn't risk it due to the health reasons and also risk of terrorist attacks. You also don't know how you'll feel at that stage of pregnancy. I've had awful pregnancy complications and wouldn't want to go abroad at that stage. You'll likely be fine with the pregnancy but I wouldn't risk food poisoning and the political situation is so unstable

Not a risk worth taking

Smurfmurf · 23/10/2023 10:28

Absolutely not. I’d not go pre Gaza issues pregnant or not. I’d definitely not be going now.

Not worth the risk

Ninabean17 · 23/10/2023 10:35

Pregnant or not, I wouldn't go.

Notaflippinclue · 23/10/2023 10:40

Wouldn't touch any of the Arab nations for a few years

SophieJo · 23/10/2023 10:41

I would cancel asap.

PinkRoses1245 · 23/10/2023 10:41

I wouldn't go anywhere in that region at the moment, pregnant or not.

Plumful · 23/10/2023 10:41

I think you’re mad to even consider it

sleepwouldbenice · 23/10/2023 10:42

Where abouts? I have just come back. Sharm is far from the unrest so I would still go re that reason
But stomach upsets do occur I had one. It lasted just 2 hours ( throwing up then slept) but was quite sudden.

I'm in the US and our government is advising against traveling there.

The food poisoning issue comes from the bacteria in the water. It can be almost impossible to avoid. It's always risky to get any kind of gastro infection during pregnancy.

Catza · 23/10/2023 10:43

I went to Egypt several years ago and didn't have any issues with food or drink. The standard advice re water and ice applies to most countries outside of Europe and I don't know if this is based on specific risks or just an urban myth. Bottled water is freely available in Egypt and if you don't want to eat in the hotel, there are McDonald's and Burger Kings everywhere. 5 hotels in Egypt are not what I would call 5 though, so it's worth bearing in mind.
However, currently it's an issue of political atmosphere in the region more so than your pregnancy and I would be cautious about going.

Sunshineclouds11 · 23/10/2023 10:43

We went 9 year ago and whilst it was lovely, 5* hotel also, we did fall ill. We had bottled
Water but people warned us about the oil they cook the food in can give you a dodgy stomach, and it did.

I wouldn't go now, and esp when preg. Sorry.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 23/10/2023 10:46

You would have no problems with food and drink safety in a 5 star hotel.
However, I would not go considering the conflict there at the moment.
