House move for job in housing crisis

scotsllb · 21/10/2023 17:58

I am a single parent in a major city which is very expensive and rent privately.
I currently earn £38k and have been offered a role in another city with a slight increase in wage but overall better prospects.

I really want to take the job as a fresh start is exactly what I need after an extremely stressful 5 years.
I would also be away from the same city as my abusive ex.

Securing housing is my biggest worry as
I don't have a great credit score
I don't have any family support or anyone to be a guarantor

I'm terrified I wouldn't be able to find property to let. I was so lucky to find the house I have.

Would I be unreasonable to take the job and try and find accommodation or wait out the housing crisis and stay put.

Depends where ... London is tricky but I'm not sure the housing issues are ever going to go away for those on low incomes. If you say the city perhaps you can get advice from someone who lives there as to how it really is.

Not knowing where you are I'll start by saying if it's Bristol then it's as hard as is reported, places go almost immediately but I know several people who have recently moved so things are opening up

It's not London, no.
I have always rented and never had problems but the last 2 years have been unreal with so much competition.
Of course agents and landlords will pick 2 incomes over 1 so I miss out.

I'm very scared to make a big mistake and give up my tenancy here and I can't find anything.

Name change fail?

If you're struggling for a guarantor, it would be worth looking at a rent guarantor service.

Have you actually looked yet? This seems a bit defeatist.
Also, have you asked the new employer for help.

Yes @Pix56 I've had a look at a few and you are right I am probably being defeatist but it would require a lot of time and energy to apply for property hundreds of miles away.

I was trying to work out if I would give my all into doing it and moving on or staying where I was as it's more secure
