Beware!! Sports Direct - poor quality credit note rejected

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 21/10/2023 16:20

I am very pissed off about this.

Anybody thinking about buying from Sports Direct should be aware, especially anybody considering buying Christmas gifts there.

  1. No refund, only credit note.
  2. if you receive a credit note MAKE SURE you take a photo of it. My credit note was printed on shiny paper, and the bar code faded away to nothing
  3. Store advised to contact Customer Services
  4. Customer Services won’t help, seemingly lost or damaged credit are not their problem. EVEN the fact that it was the poor quality of the credit note that causes the issue.

AIBU to expect a lot better from Sports Direct?

I certainly will not buy from them again.
I will note the people in store were lovely, but nothing they could do to help.

Not surprised about this. Exactly what I’d expect from Sports Direct.

Pippa12 · 21/10/2023 16:22

I’d ring trading standards about this situation.

gotomomo · 21/10/2023 16:24

The till role fading is the same for every store using that style, just fold it and put in wallet, then use quickly. Their returns policy have always been no refunds unless faulty

Coldinscotland · 21/10/2023 16:26

Recently bought ds some trainers costing £80.He wore them from the house to the car and car into the dentist's.. A hole. Took them back. The store assistant stuck his finger through making the hole bigger and declared it not a manufacturing fault. Refused to refund.. Twat. Not sure how dh kept his cool. And how is the ultimate cool man. Never getting another penny off me that shop.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 21/10/2023 16:35

I forgot to mention, I still have the refund receipt, you can see matching values on both. There should be a way for Sports Direct to provide the bar code number for the credit note for that receipt.

But no….

Oh no OP! Sadly it doesn’t surprise me. I spent part of a credit note after we’d returned something, got a receipt handed to me and was told I didn’t need anything else re the balance of credit when I asked. That was incorrect and caused a load of hassle when I tried to claim the credit off a subsequent purchase. Lucky for me there were only only a few days between transactions and it was only resolved when I said yes to the store manager’s huffy suggestion of “do you want me to look at the cctv”. If they’d wiped the recording they’d have kept my money. No apology either, treated as if it was my problem and they were doing me a huge favour

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 21/10/2023 16:38

I was ok with credit note instead of refund. Not ideal, but I was ok with it.

I folded the credit note and refund receipt and put it in my wallet immediately, in a section that does not get used.

4 weeks later, the bar code had faded to nothing.

Im very impressed you managed to find a member of staff to be lovely to you. Last time we shopped there the entire shop floor seemed to be staffed by one very harassed looking young man.

But thanks for the heads up - another reason to avoid.

cdhmum · 21/10/2023 17:02

Could you try another store and act like this is your first time trying to return? This is clearly their fault - you have no control over the paper a receipt is printed on.

Sale of Goods says that they can't fob you off with a credit note when you ask for a refund.

You beat me to it 😁
My experience with Sports Direct was also very poor and they insisted I accepted the credit note. I refused and went to Trading Standards with the right outcome.
Trading Standards are well aware of these practices but it doesn't stop it happening I'm afraid 😳

trader21c · 21/10/2023 17:39

Thanks for the warning I’ll avoid them

I'm not surprised either. I won't buy online from them again.

You’re ok if you buy online as you can return for a refund. It’s in store purchases that you get a credit note.

LadyEloise1 · 21/10/2023 17:46

I'm in Ireland and I know it was hassley when I bought shoes online and had to return them.

LolaSmiles · 21/10/2023 17:52

I stopped shopping there when they put signs on the till saying they didn't do refunds.
I'm not surprised given they're also a business group that's reportedly treated their workers poorly as well.

It's not somewhere I'd expect decent service

MaverickSnoopy · 21/10/2023 17:58

Thanks for the reminder. I decided long ago that they are too much hard work, but experience fades with time. Sorry you have gone through this. I would definitely contact trading standards. Does the credit note have a date stamp on it? It would at least prove that it's faded prematurely which is not acceptable.

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 21/10/2023 18:02

House of Fraser (owned by the same people) is similar. I went straight to the makeup department and spent the credit note last time I returned something - I didn’t want to risk there being an issue.

GoingOverToTheDarkSide · 21/10/2023 18:03

Exactly what I’d expect from them sadly, they’re royal arseholes.
I had similar with Sainsbury’s but that was incompetence rather than attitude - bought a couple of boxes of wine glasses which were annoyingly just too tall for my cupboard. Took them back but the car code on the receipt wouldn’t read. The check out staff tried entering the number manually and assured me the refund would go through - never did ☹️

Freshstart78 · 21/10/2023 18:03

Good to know about house of Fraser! Didn’t know that! Very useful as that would have been an Xmas pressie destination

Almondmum · 21/10/2023 18:03

Sports Direct are notorious for this. They are absolute robbing bastards.

FlippittyFlop · 21/10/2023 18:04

Will never use them...
I had a recent online order go missing. They admitted it was lost in transit, but would not process refund, saying that they had to wait until it arrived back to their warehouse. It was so ridiculous, the package was already missing for 3 weeks with no guarantee it was ever going to show up.

I ended up submitting a charge back to my bank with evidence that I got nowhere with their customer support. Got my money back through the bank in less than 3 days (Ireland).

They’ve gone massively downhill since the Sports Direct lot took over. I don’t shop there anymore (the credit note issue was the last straw) and I used to be in there all the time.

I don’t think they ever properly recovered from going into administration.
