Naturist resort

A long time friend has invited me and DC on holiday with her family to Germany for next year, all is well, I’ve been on holiday with her before in the past and it would be lovely to get away since last time was pre-lockdown. However, it’s a predominantly naturist resort/campsite which has me unsure whether we should go. I’m not inherently adverse to it since she’s told me covering up is optional, however I’ve never done something like this and I do have a few worries

Never in a million years for me. My ten and my eleven year olds would die a death of embarrassment. So would I for that matter maybe I'm a prude but I can't think of anything worse especially with kids in tow.

OhComeOnFFS · 21/10/2023 13:58

Don't be ridiculous, of course you don't take an 11 year old boy to a place like that. Are you crazy?

edwinbear · 21/10/2023 14:00

Not in hells chance would my 11yr old be comfortable in that situation. Neither would I

When I about four my parents took us camping in the south of France and we visited what was then called a 'nudist colony' on the coast. This was in the 1960s. It was confusing at the time as I'd never been anywhere like that before and didn't understand why no one was wearing a stitch of clothing. I remember quite a lot of boats full of tourists sailing by to gawk and being absolutely horrified. My parents tried to get me to take my bikini bottoms off but I adamantly refused to. Thankfully they didn't push it, but it was awful. I think my brothers were okay about it, but I very much was not, not even a bit.

Tahiti Plage by any chance? It's still there!

Schoolchoicesucks · 21/10/2023 14:46

Thank goodness OP, your poor 11 year old son. If you've been brought up in a naturist environment that's one thing but at 11 to suddenly be put in that environment with your naked mum and mum's friend and your naked 11 year old friend. The naked strangers would be the least of my worries!

Can you take your son on a different holiday?

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 21/10/2023 14:47

Good god.

If I was invited on holiday by a friend and then they went 'oh and we'll be naked by the way' I would expire.

Blimey, that could be it! The rocky area looks very familiar and may have been where we sat. https://www.brittanytourism.com/offers/plage-de-tahiti-nevez-en-1981523/

One thing I recall was the number of men who had string tied around their hips and penis, to hold it in place. I remember asking my dad what was going on and he said it was to stop it bouncing around, which I believed (I was a very innocent child). It was only years later it occurred me that the method was for the men who'd get an erection, so it wasn't as obvious.

If you are not keen, and planning on being covered, why bother.

Go elsewhere.

AbsolutelyFemale · 21/10/2023 15:08

Ds and I went to a huge family waterpark in Germany recently. He is also 11. There was an amazing spa included which we went to. We didn't realise until we were in it that you were supposed to be naked in there. Everyone else was. We decided to hang on to our costumes and if anyone challenged us to say were were British and it was against our cultural values. There were some creepy middle-aged men in there. Not for me I have to say, couldn't do an entire holiday of it.

ChaToilLeam · 21/10/2023 15:09

I live in Germany and people are very relaxed about nudity here at beaches and parks and bathing areas, it is even compulsory at saunas. Lots of my friends are fine with it - I am not and there is absolutely no way I would go. I go with a group of female friends every year to a thermal spa but those who want to do the sauna thing go off and do that and the rest of us bob about in the heated pools (cossie on). Even though it is supposed to be non sexual nudity, some friends felt very uncomfortable in the sauna with a guy staring at their bodies.

So no, I don’t think this would be a good holiday for you to go on. Hopefully there will be another opportunity at a more suitable location!

Oh that is GRIM I thought nudist places were weird af before I knew men used string because they knew they'd be aroused around other naked people including kids.

OnlyFlans1 · 21/10/2023 15:16

Go for it OP, what 11 year old boy wouldn’t be delighted to go on holiday with a bunch of old German perves flaunting their genitals.

AIBUNature · 21/10/2023 15:17

Thanks everyone for your responses, I’ll try to answer them as best I can

As for people saying why was I even questioning it, We’re a pretty relaxed household when it comes to nudity and the idea of sex and nudity are strictly separate things. That doesn’t mean people walk around stark naked by the way. And so I thought a getaway could be good, however I’ve perhaps been too naive and I worry for DS’ welfare there.

About going on holiday ourselves instead, it was a good opportunity specifically with my friend and her family as she was happy to help with costs as her family is quite well off. I don’t know fully about the covering up situation, that’s what she told me.

I’m not adverse (personally) to the lifestyle, and I do want to try it by myself at some point, although again, all it takes is one creepy man to ruin it and so I’m hesitant.

Perhaps start with a nudist spa?

Make it well away from your home town though 🤣🤣

MiddleagedBeachbum · 21/10/2023 15:35

I’ve several European friends who’ve grown up holidaying this way, it’s very very normal in Eastern Europe to sauna naked.
it’s a shame as you may well of loved the holiday! I’d think it would actually do children the world of good. Any kids I’ve seen at festivals around naked people has helped them grow up with more body confidence.

gotomomo · 21/10/2023 15:45

Find out whether it's full on naturist or just allows it on certain areas. In Germany it's normal for people to be naked in saunas, swimming pools, jacuzzi's but never seen people playing tennis or walking around naked away from aforementioned facilities. I'm not keen on people being naked in the bar ! (To eaches own but not my thing!)

gotomomo · 21/10/2023 15:49

In the canaries we were at a 50/50 German/British resort and there was a naturist pool and the beach was clothing optional, I liked it as it was no under 16's, much quieter and you could wear clothes if you wanted to (i did, dp didn't)

And taking an 11 year old boy 😂

That sounds like a good place for me although I don’t know if I’d be ever able to afford it 😬

That one is Brittany, SoF is this one. Its actually part of a massive bay round the back of St Trop. It's a lovely beach, especially out of season. I remember going there as a child and seeing all the naked people was both horrifying and slightly fascinating.

Duh, of course. Weekend Brain!

I don't think it was that one as I mainly remember everywhere being rocky. We used to stay just outside Le Lavandou, when it was still a sleepy village and very quiet, so it may have been near there.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 21/10/2023 17:18

Hell no, unless you want to scar your kids for life. I actually think it's very wrong to expose kids to naked adults. If they choose to go be exhibitionists naturists as adults that's their choice.

Exactly what I was going to say. Friend was invited by distant in laws to a nudist resort. She was horrified when they talked about being able to shop naked in the mini supermarket on site and hire on site bikes……….Grim.

Eh no.
Pushing nudity onto an 11yr old is not a good thing.
