To wonder what you paid - Calling all recent brides

I'm after some context as to whether a quote I have received for make up on my wedding day is a lot or not so was hoping for some input from any recent Mumsnet brides!

I've contacted several make up artists for a quote for 3 adults (bride, bridesmaid & mother of the bride) and an 11 year old who may just want a tiny bit of lipgloss & mascara applying.

The one make up artist who has come back to me so far is incidentally the one I liked the most but I'm quite staggered by her quote.

I completely understand she needs to factor in travel costs and time (just over an hour each way). I'm not looking for a cheap service and will gladly pay the going rate, but I don't actually know what that is! With nothing else so far to compare her quote to, I'm wondering what you would expect or did pay for similar on your wedding day?

$1800 for hair and make up, bride, mother of the bride, MoH and 2 little bridesmaid.

Tweddle · 19/10/2023 14:59

About £1200 for 4 adults. It’s not just travel and time, it’s products etc.

DappledOliveGroves · 19/10/2023 15:00

£355 altogether for me, my maid of honour and some lip gloss for 2 child bridesmaids.

Glad it's not just me! 😱

I've been to a few very recently so not a bride but as a member of the bridal party.

The first paid £450 - for the bride and 3 bridesmaids and the second paid £300 for just the bride but she stayed until the evening to do a top up and slight hair change before the first dance.

Anything over £500 is madness!

McIntire · 19/10/2023 15:11

£500 Bride only

RigorMortisRadio · 19/10/2023 15:11

My Dsis has just booked hers for next year and it's £550 for Bride, 3 Bridesmaids and MOB.

Charideeshopz · 19/10/2023 15:13

£1200 for bride, bridesmaids, mother of bride and she also did hair.

cheshire

About £680 that’s brides hair and makeup on the day and trial and then two bridesmaids and MOB hair and makeup

2jacqi · 19/10/2023 15:19

I think you will probably find your own make up looks better as well as being easier on the purse. enough expense for a wedding as it is.

HattieIou · 19/10/2023 15:20

£1200?? I'm floored.

Snowdropcow · 19/10/2023 15:20

I’m Cheshire based.

I’m paying £50 for makeup and £50 for hair for each bridesmaid (all adults). I think my makeup artist charges half that for under 12s.

For myself I’m paying £130 for hair and makeup as well as £100 for the trial.

I’m gobsmacked at some of these prices!!

Me too!!!

Honestly paying over a thousand pounds for hair and make up for one day is truly bonkers!

Caspianberg · 19/10/2023 15:23

Just bride hair and make up was -£120 - it took about 2hrs total

McIntire · 19/10/2023 15:24

I was shocked at £500 for bride only but she was amazing and worth every penny!

Motomum23 · 19/10/2023 15:25

I'm in the wrong job!!! 🤪

Me too. Even if you allow £200 for replacement of product and £100 for travel expenses, that could still be £200+ as an hourly rate, effectively!

Good for the MUAs though. If people will pay it then I don’t blame them for charging it!

But it's a couple of hours at most surely for hair and make up so that's £250 an hour! I just cannot get my head around that.

Wow!
This is a ridiculous amount of money. That's about what i paid this year for a ten day holiday in Europe

RandomButtons · 19/10/2023 15:27

I’d expect minimum £60 per person per hair or makeup going by rates around here. So £120 per person for hair + makeup.

But I know some who charge a whole lot more than that, and I can tell you the good ones are worth every penny. I’ve seen brides with full face of acne completely perfectly covered.

I did my own for my wedding day and I don’t recommend it unless you’re really strapped for cash or you really know what you’re doing.

Tangled123 · 19/10/2023 15:32

I paid £45 for makeup and about £30 for hair. The hairdresser and MUA are related to the groom though.

We got a lot of other stuff cheaper than usual by using family too.

She travelled almost and hour to the venue
4hrs in total for hair and makeup.
She provided all the makeup and a hairpiece.
She helped with getting the dress on, fixing the veil and stayed to help with photographer poses.

She made the bride eat and kept her calm.
She tidied the room up after, made the bed etc the B&G were going back there after the wedding)

She was more like a Lady-in-Waiting 😂
