Britney forced into having an abortion by Justin Timberlake

I'm unclear where the "forced" comes into it.

I was thinking this too. ‘Pressured’ may be a better word. But with both at 19, that’s just a mess for everyone.

Jbrown76 · 17/10/2023 19:00

If it had been left up to me alone. I never would have done it. She only agreed because he was unhappy that she was pregnant and didn't want to be a father...

Later he treats her (and a lot of other women) like dirt

Yes, "Forced" is the way the media are spinning it. Having read that excerpt, if that is actually the true account, she is saying that she was present in the decision making.
I do think that there is potential for her to have been "overly encouraged" by him though. I think she was the submissive one of that relationship, even though she was an equal "Star" to him ... if not bigger!

That doesn't mean she was forced. Having an abortion because one party is unhappy about the pregnancy isn't the same as being forced.

SecondUsername4me · 17/10/2023 19:07

Sounds like an awful experience - at 19, in love and pregnant and feeling like it's the only option, but one you wouldn't have made if the choice felt truly your own.

I wonder if he ever questions if his insistence on this has contributed to her declining mental health.

OhComeOnFFS · 17/10/2023 19:10

But if he was going to treat her like dirt, maybe it was better for her that she didn't have a baby with him.

I really feel for her - that must have been a horrible time.

StaunchMomma · 17/10/2023 19:11

I always thought that was one of her better songs.

Couldn't remember the video but on rewatching it comes across rather differently in light of this new information.

Ni idea why people feel the need to reach to protect him. We have no reason to think she's lying.

This.

SecondUsername4me · 17/10/2023 19:15

DisquietintheRanks · 17/10/2023 19:13

This.

One of the definitions of Forced: obtained or imposed by coercion or physical power.

She was coerced. So the OP can reasonably use the word Forced in her title.

DisquietintheRanks · 17/10/2023 19:18

How was she coerced?

sparklefresh · 17/10/2023 19:20

I think she is, and was, very vulnerable.

Siameasy · 17/10/2023 19:21

Not forced, no evidence of that. He didn’t want the baby and she chose to have an abortion. Sounds like she regrets it and some women do regret it. But it was her decision and she needs to take responsibility

sparklefresh · 17/10/2023 19:22

If people don't think that coercion happens, they need to open their eyes. Just because you don't have a gun to your head doesn't mean you aren't being forced, if you're emotionally immature and/or in the thrall of a stronger personality.

Thedm · 17/10/2023 19:25

He just told her he didn’t want it. Men are allowed to say that. He told her he didn’t want it, said they were too young, voiced his feelings. She could also voice hers. She chose an abortion. If he had said he wanted the baby, or if it had been a one night stand she never saw again, then maybe she would have kept it but because her partner didn’t want it, and she was probably conflicted, she chose abortion. She wasn’t forced.

Men are allowed to voice their feelings, as long as it doesn’t go towards abuse and coercion etc.

I don’t like Timberlake, but I can’t see how this is something he forced.

Gowlett · 17/10/2023 19:25

I remember Nicole Appleton talking about her abortion, when she was pregnant with Robbie Williams. Mel Blatt was already expecting, so they didn’t want Nicole having a baby too. Her management. All Saints were huge at the time.

It must have been painful for her seeing Mel’s girl, growing up. I think it’s good to talk about abortion, either way.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 17/10/2023 19:27

They were both teenagers. He was clear he didn’t want to be a dad (just like pretty much any other teenage boy) and on that basis she agreed to have an abortion. We have no idea whether he was actively pressuring her to get an abortion or just stating firmly that he didn’t want to be dad. I don’t think saying you don’t want a baby and pressuring to have an abortion are always the same thing. People seem to be adding in a lot of detail that we don’t actually know at this point. Should he have lied and said he was happy/wanted a baby?

Blanketpolicy · 17/10/2023 19:29

Based only on the information provided - a 19 year old young man said he didnt want a baby, he was too young, he thought they were not ready. 19 year old women doesnt want to do it alone and terminates.

That isnt any proof of force.

I agree. Interesting how many MNers were apparently close friends of Britney at the time so they know exactly what happened!!!

Quite. Of course women can and are coerced into having abortions, yes that could have been the case here, from what she's written its impossible to tell beyond him saying they were too young and she agreed to go ahead with it. Heartbreaking for any woman to regret their decision, but I don't think it's overly wild for a 19 year old on the cusp of a big career saying they dont feel ready and vocalising that. Bit of a savage thing for her to write about to be honest and naming him, wonder if a lot of her downfall relates to the way he treated her.

Askil · 17/10/2023 19:34

100% agree. Let's not paint all women as completely powerless damsels. She needs to take responsibility for her own decisions.

Prescottdanni123 · 17/10/2023 19:35

You can be mentally or emotionally forced into doing something. Like if the man is saying things like "You'll never cope" "You are too young" "You will be a crap mum" "I'll dump you if you don't have an abortion and then where will you be".

ThePoshUns · 17/10/2023 19:36

She wasn't 'forced' and looking at how things have turned out, was probably the best decision at the time.

FeelSoDown · 17/10/2023 19:36

Pretty much most men wouldn’t want a woman to continue with an unplanned pregnancy and would voice their opinion on it.

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/10/2023 19:40

2 (very rich 19 year olds surrounded by advisers) get pregnant and agree to have an abortion.

"I agreed not to have the baby"

Not sure how that is one forcing the other.
