To ignore the washing instructions on kids' bits and put them in the machine?

I need to wash a pirate costume I bought for DS's pirate party at school. It's hand wash only. I also need to wash baby's soft toys which are wipe clean only. It's not unreasonable to chuck all of these in the machine together on a delicate cycle, is it?! 🤔

YABU - don't machine wash
YANBU - they'll be fine on a delicate cycle

def machine wash.
if they don't survive they are not worth keeping imo.

if in doubt use the wool or delicate cycle. and a very low or no spin.

good luck.

Don’t machine wash. I did this with my DS firefighter costume and all the printed bits started peeling off. I’d put in the extra 5 mins to hand wash.

It's survival of the fittest here.

I have found that canvas/fabric kids shoes and trainers can go through too

Does your washing machine have a 15 minute cycle? Wash them individually via that. Wouldn't put them all in together.

They may well be fine but no guarantees of course! My DD is now adult but when she was about 8 once had a winter coat I bought before realising it was dry clean only. It was just a normal padded waterproof coat but I avoided washing it for ages. Then when it was old and tatty I just decided I had nothing to lose so machine washed it and it was perfectly OK. I think I would be a bit careful what I washed with the pirate costume if it is bright colours though as they may run. Soft toys with polyester stuffing will probably be OK but beware if they are bean bag filling as if it splits in the machine you will have microbeads everywhere and may kill machine. Good luck!

Put them in one of those mesh laundry bags in case bits come off. I have washed witch costumes and ds's backpack that said wipe clean only. Use a hand-wash cycle

Some fancy dress costumes will fall apart - some will be fine.

I lost all the buttons off a pirate costume in the machine. They were just bits of coloured fabric glues on......I fixed it with gold fabric paint. Lasted another good few years.

My view is if it doesn't last the machine they wouldn't wear it/play with it anyway while it sits in the bottom of the washing basket waiting for a day I do hand washing (never).

I machine wash lots of things that areI hand wash only or dry clean only. I would go go for delicates cycle (sometimes the very shortest washes are more intensive) and a cold water wash with 800 spin. Maybe a second faster spin if all OK.

Thanks all! The pirate outfit is second hand so would really like to give it a proper wash before DS son wears it. I think I'll give the delicate cycle a wash.

After what @Escaperoom said about the toys - I'm still debating what to do with these! They're mainly mamas and papas so not especially cheap ones that I wouldn't mind binning if they did fall apart.

Hand wash items quickly learn some harsh lessons about life with me. It's always fine.
