AIBU
so my car was broken and it was collected By the mechanic and brought to the city centre to get a serious repair. This is approx 100miles from me so I needed to collect it and had made plans to do so via train.
My colleague was in said city and her partner and she were travelling from that city to my village on the day of collection.
They were going to use public transport.. underground and two trains and then a lift from the station.
They offered to drive my car back to the village if I arranged delivery of the car to their home that evening.
I was very pleased and grateful as it saved me a round trip and as I saw it saved them a lot of hassle too.
Everyone's a winner , right !?
Not really, when the arrived back to the village she asked me for £40 and tolls for the privilege.
I was absolutely open mouthed with shock.
AIBU.

Wow, I actually have no words .

PushingPeopleAway · 15/10/2023 16:24

I hope you took the cost of their train tickets off the £40 before paying them. CFers!

44PumpLane · 15/10/2023 16:25

It's difficult, who paid for the insurance to have either the friend or her boyfriend insured on your car for the day? Did it cost you to arrange for the car to be delivered to their house?

The arrangement needs to benefit both parties, if you were out of pocket on the insurance and delivery charge, I'd say cover the tolls (as you would have needed to do that anyway) but not a penny more.

The friend will have benefitted in terms of time, cost saving and convenience, you have benefitted in terms of time and convenience.

CheersToMe · 15/10/2023 16:26

Did they have to fill the tank?

fallforall · 15/10/2023 16:27

They had open insurance.
They provided their own diesel down to the exact drop.
I paid for delivery of car to their place.

For original plans:-

How much would trains havr cost them?

How much would diesel have cost you?

They do sound cheeky.

44PumpLane · 15/10/2023 16:29

Then I say pay for tolls, to the penny, and no more.

Then you've covered the costs you would have incurred anyway, but saved yourself the diesel cost in the way back and the cost of getting there and the time.

They have saved their train ticket but paid for diesel, and saved some time.

You've both made some cash savings and time savings .

Mamatolittleboy · 15/10/2023 16:31

I’m on your side here OP. By the sounds of it they would have paid a lot more going via public transport. Assuming you also wouldn’t of had to pay out for delivery of car back to their place either.

I need to know what you said when she asked for the money though!

44PumpLane · 15/10/2023 16:32

Sorry just spotted it cost you to have the car delivered to them.....how much was that versus what you would have paid to get there plus diesel back?

Eg. Tenner to the garage to deliver it to them versus £40 train and £20 diesel then fine. But if it was £100 to have the car delivered to them but would have been £20 train and £10 diesel then no you shouldn't pay any more.

All just depends on the various costs that would have been involved.

redalex261 · 15/10/2023 16:34

£40 AND tolls? what is the £40 for, and how much are the tolls? What would public transport for the two of them cost? They are CFs. I would definitely check out what they would have paid for train etc. and deduct that from what they are asking for! They may owe you money! Just smile brightly, show them your figures and shut the door on them (forever). Oh, and warn all your friends sbout them.

fallforall · 15/10/2023 16:35

I didn't even consider their costs.
As far as I was concerned I was saving them a fortune in money and time and they were doing me a favour by saving me time.
I'm the opposite position i would have been thrilled and out plenty diesel into the tank and thanked them
Profusely.
Different strokes ...
I literally said..'Are you joking?'

HerMammy · 15/10/2023 16:35

What's the £40 for? their time?
I'd be telling them to fuck off

Alopeciabop · 15/10/2023 16:47

What did they say when you said that?

fallforall · 15/10/2023 17:08

I handed over the money and have not spoken to them since
