Invasive underwriter checks on a car insurance policy

My 22 yo DS has had a request from his car insurance underwriter for proof of all of his details. They want a copy of his V5, copies of his driving licence and the driving licences of the other named drivers on his policy. They want pictures of his car, front, left, right, inside, speedo, under the bonnet, in the boot. They were questioning him about modifications - he's had the car for three years, no claims or accidents. Why do they want all this info? Is this normal?

Be very careful to check everything is correct before sending, my son had his policy cancelled because he made an error on the application, causing no end of bother and extra expense trying to find another insurer.

Maybe it's been cloned and someone is trying to claim against it? They could have the correct registration and a visual description which is different to your DS causing them to ask for evidence of his vehicles appearance.

Or even someone claiming they've been in an accident with him. Obviously photos of the car would show any signs of damage
