A parking one (of sorts)

Still musing on this from earlier.

Drove youngest to school in bad traffic and rain today.

The road nearest school is on a narrow road where the traffic is single lane - usually queuing far back at 8am - but traffic splits to go left or right near the end IYSWIM.

There are a few parking bays on the right near the end too (restricted, but in middle of day, not morning).

So I parked in one and then, as we were a few mins early, was getting DD to go over her spellings quickly so not looking out of the car.

About 5 mins later, a woman waves at my window and asks 'are you parked?' And when I said yes, she starts ranting and saying 'didn't you see the traffic queue you've caused all the way back?!'

Honestly no I didn't, as I wasn't expecting it and had indicated, pulled right in and turned engine off. I replied, 'well my car is off and I'm legally parked in a marked space so I don't know what else you wanted me to do'.

Did I miss some driving etiquette? Should I have hopped out first and ushered cars past?

I then had a load of angry men in vans glare at me as they drove past like I should never have been there. But- it's not hard to tell if a car is parked is it?

The rule is that we need a diagram

Electrictache · 12/10/2023 21:38

I don't understand why the traffic was backed up unless the space is obstructing the lane?

Coffeerum · 12/10/2023 21:38

I can’t really imagine why traffic would stop along side you for 5 minutes after you had parked. This whole scenario is so hard to picture. Why would all the vehicles behind be glaring at you and not at the driver at the front who was causing the backup?

McBethany · 12/10/2023 21:39

No diagram = no opinion

MaggieFS · 12/10/2023 21:39

Diagram or it didn't happen.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 12/10/2023 21:40

Come on OP! Are you a newbie?
where’s the diagram?!?

Notanotheruser111 · 12/10/2023 21:42

I think I get what you’re saying. I’m assuming where you parked is close to where the traffic splits.
so the people behind you think they are queuing for a particular turning lane not realising they need to move around you and the continue on?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 12/10/2023 21:44

Can we please stop with the diagram crap?

Rarely helpful and seriously boring.

Nah, let’s keep it.

Sigmama · 12/10/2023 21:48

it doesn't sound like a great place to stop and do spellings, legal or not

PuppyMonkey · 12/10/2023 21:50

Well if we’re not getting a diagram, somebody else needs to explain it better than OP has.

Awrite · 12/10/2023 21:51

Yes, could someone who understands, dumb it down for me please?

kegofcoffee · 12/10/2023 21:51

I assume it was her that was blocking the traffic by stopping in the road. Because she was assuming you'd quickly drop DC off and then free up the space for her to use?

You did nothing wrong. But if that was the case and spaces are limited at drop off then I can see why she was a bit frustrated by you hanging around in the space.

octodrive · 12/10/2023 21:51

Did you put your lights off?

SpiderD · 12/10/2023 21:54

Ugh knew you would ask...

As long as you were fully within the bay and with lights and engine off then you're good

blanketsmell · 12/10/2023 21:59

Really they should complain to the council to get the bay removed though it looks annoying

DustyLee123 · 12/10/2023 21:59

If you’d drawn a duck on the pond, I’d have given you 10/10 for the picture 🤣

Tiredmum100 · 12/10/2023 21:59

One of the best diagrams ever produced!

SpiderD · 12/10/2023 21:59

Would not have been accurate. No ducks. Just a Lime bike and pigeons

SpiderD · 12/10/2023 22:00

@Tiredmum100 stop, am blushing!

McBethany · 12/10/2023 22:00

Decent number of ponds in that area.
