To wonder about hot tub etiquette

My house is in a village where the gardens are really overlooked as they are all down a steep hill. Basically everyone can see everything including from the road. It's a conservation area so not possible to build up walls or anything for any privacy but the trade off is it's a beautiful area and lovely community.

My partner really wants a hot tub. Not to do anything rude in, just to chill in, the kids would enjoy playing in it. He's got a plan to build it so it it hidden under our garden decking with a hidden lid you could lift and get in so it wouldn't be an eyesore.

I think it's inconsiderate to the neighbours because they might feel weird about people in swimwear hanging out in a hot tub right in their line of sight.

He thinks i'm being a grinch because we know ourselves and know we wouldn't be doing anything rude, would always have swimwear on and wouldn't be making noise or anything. And besides (he says) everyone can see everyone in their gardens in the village anyway so what's the problem. In the summer people sunbathe on deckchairs or whatnot in their swimwear and no one cares.

IABU - I am being a grinch and should let my family have the hot tub
YANBU - it's insanity to put in a hot tub in a hugely overlooked space

Just put screens around it

surreygirl1987 · 09/10/2023 19:51

Unless you're going to strip and/or have sex in it, it's perfectly fine.

ActDottie · 09/10/2023 20:02

It’s perfectly normal to wear swimwear in a garden even without a hot tub. If you are worried just put a screen up.

PuttingDownRoots · 09/10/2023 20:03

We have a gazebo over ours.

LlynTegid · 09/10/2023 20:04

Screens I agree. Seems a very expensive thing to buy when compared with the cost of a few spa visits, in my opinion.

Zanatdy · 09/10/2023 20:05

It’s fine I’d say, but beware if costs a fortune to run

Meowandthen · 09/10/2023 20:05

No matter what people claim they are known as sex ponds in my house. Usually an eyesore too.

Paperbagsaremine · 09/10/2023 20:05

They'd see you in your swimsuits in a swimming pool; they'd see you in swimsuits if you and the kids were playing in a paddling pool; I'm not sure why it would be much different if they see you in your swimsuits sitting chatting in a hot tub?

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 09/10/2023 20:09

I'd be more worried about the noise of it than the sight of it. Is it gonna annoy your neighbours?

NotTooOldPaul · 09/10/2023 20:16

I live in a first floor flat. The girl next door has a hot tub in her garden. If I see her in it I rapidly more back from the window as I don't want her to think I am enjoying seeing her in the hot tub, sometimes in a bikini, other times naked.
It
is her garden, her hot tub so I give her respect and privacy. It is not hard to
do.
I’d expect any decent neighbour to do the same as me.

Regarding screens: because it’s on a steep hill unless the screens were literally 20 foot high you could still see in from uphill and the road so for those neighbours they would still see.

But point taken that point taken maybe i’m being a prude! Funny because i do feel fine about sunbathing in bikini in garden in hot weather just feels it would be different somehow.

Maybe i should chill and OLO
