Washing machine or tumble dryer? What is eating my clothes

New clothes and old are getting holes in them. Always seems to be in the seems. I can’t work out whether it’s my washing machine or tumble dryer that is eating them. It’s mainly lighter weight cotton cardigans or recently my favourite linen trousers. But it’s happening more frequently now.

So is it my
YABU - Washing machine
YANBU - tumble dryer?

And what can I do about it?

TDs are clothes destroyers in my experience.

I grew up with American washing machines which are much more rigorous than British front loaders... TD all the way ruins clothes. The lint filters literally strip your clothes & the heat destroys decals, etc.

Moths?

my clothes all have holes around the belt area. Either there’s a moth that eats through my clothes in the wardrobe one hole at a time, like the hungry caterpillar, or it’s when I sit at my desk (WFH) and the belt rubs clothes just where I lean against the desk. Never had this when I worked outside home, but I wouldn’t have been wearing jeans with a belt either.

No evidence of moths. And to be honest, the clothes went from being clean in the spare room on the bed to be worn then washing basket. Windows upstairs all have fly screen on. Would moths be obvious?

My husband tumble dries all of his clothes- they get holey very quickly. I rarely tumble dry mine and they last years and years. Get a drying rack and a dehumidifier.

It’s probably the belt line that's rough and rubbing on yours clothes tbf (especially the front bit by the button. The other areas are where seatbelts rub.

Good point! I know it’s not moths as it’s only on seems and the trousers were like it had been caught. Maybe I’ll have to stop the cardigans in the tumble dryer.

Do you have any clothes that have drawstrings with metal 'stoppers' at the ends of the strings? (Don't know the right word for them lol)

I find these cause holes

IAmHeartless · 09/10/2023 09:53

@wasaloner no no tops lie that. dH has the odd goody but it wasn’t in the recent wash
