So of course I know it's wrong to snoop someone else's personal communication but I'm curious how many other people would of done the same as me in my situation.
I worked for a small tech company (15 people) for my first job out of uni. The boss was also the company owner and a real bully. Some examples of behaviour below:
- sending aggressive emails to employees commenting on their appearance or personal hygiene
- making funny faces of an employee behind his back who had autism for months
- having an affair with an intern
- getting drunk in the work day and pressuring others to join
- asking female workers if they were pregnant
- hiring people and firing them after a couple of days if he didn't like them
- generally shouting at everyone
We were all very young, for most of us it was our first job and there was no HR - I find it crazy I put up with this behaviour now and lucky the company has since shut down.
People got fired all the time - for a few months it was 1 a week and there was a crazy turn over of staff. The meeting room was a glass box and they'd only draw the curtains if someone was getting fired and we all sat there terrified waiting to see who would be called in.
I discovered I had access to my bosses Gmail on my work computer as it had been his previously and I would check daily to see if I was going to get fired - the owner and office manager would always discuss in advance. Would you of done the same?
(If you're wondering why I didn't just leave - I loved the team, I loved the work - it was my dream job minus the owner and in the end I did leave as it was too unstable)
AIBU - you wouldn't of looked
AINBU - you would of looked like I did
