It's an old seeing box that belonged to my great grandma. She was born in 1902.

I can see the stamp on it but it doesn't seem old enough to be from 1919

*sewing box!

So the writing says

From Vera Xmas 1962

Vera was my grandma, her daughter. So that makes sense

But did she gift a second hand box or do we think it looks 1962 in style?

The legs look mid century.

CherrySocks · 02/10/2023 21:44

I was going to say 1950s so it was probably early 1960s. The 1919 is maybe just a manufacturing ref no.

I read the thread title and thought you might be talking about my husband! 🤣🤣

OhItsYouThen · 02/10/2023 21:46

@WhateverMate ha. Already got one of my own but thanks anyway!

I think I'd agree that 1962 is probably about right. Thank you

I think the legs don't match the box. The box could be 1919, I though early 20's before I saw the date. Could the legs have been replaced?

Justifiedcheese · 02/10/2023 21:50

Mid century for sure. The legs are particularly indicative but the box is pretty modern too (we have lots of edwardian furniture and it's much more chunky and elaborate). 1962 sounds about right.
As pp has said the stamp is a model no or serial number.
Suspect it's teak with a walnut veneer.

OhItsYouThen · 02/10/2023 21:50

@DisforDarkChocolate possibly! I'll check in the morning. The sides of the box are a smooth shiny wood - has to be walnut - not that I'm a wood expert. And it was definitely given as a gift in 1962 as my great grandma has scratched that into the box lid
