To be miffed that I can't watch horror films anymore

I used to absolutely LOVE horror films but now I am old and weary (43) and living alone, I just can't do it.

Went to see the new Saw movie with a friend yesterday and spent most of my time hidden in his armpit.

I make sure I watch anything remotely scary in the daytime at home 🤣

Although I don't have any desire to watch the Saw films!

To be fair it was very cleverly written but.. just... ew...

As long as you can, in theory kill it…. 😉🤣I don’t like things you can’t kill, things like the Ring, demons etc.

Same here... In the morning then you've got all day to forget about it 😂

I used to love all that! The Ring, Exorcist, Poltergeist, etc.

I saw a trailor for the new Exorcist movie yesterday and just the trailor alone freaked me the hell out 🤣

I never could.

I just hate getting startled / scares and it leaves me with a fairly negative psychological reaction. As if my mind needed some time to recover. Idk if that makes sense.

And the ones that are more thriller-ish/psycho-terrory just mess me up...

I do however wonder what I have been missing. Sort of jealous of you tbh. At least you managed to watch them when you were younger 😂😅

NightLightHalfLight · 02/10/2023 17:06

My friend always said how tough her Mum was and one thing was she was still, doing was watching horror films alone at night in her eighties.

nutellacrepe · 02/10/2023 17:11

YANBU for struggling with horror, but YABU for watching Saw. I haven't enjoyed a movie like that since I was in my teens going to sleepovers. Serial killer slasher is not the only type of horror, maybe you just need a slightly different genre of horror/ something more grown-up.

I recently watched a movie called 'Bones and All' which might interest people who aren't into the slashers anymore.

KimberleyClark · 02/10/2023 17:13

I’m not into slasher films but I do like supernatural horror preferably featuring possessions, priests and exorcisms.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 02/10/2023 17:13

I have heard the new Saw is particularly.... visceral 🤣

BanjoMango · 02/10/2023 17:18

I quite like horror films but I prefer jump scares and atmospheric horror. I watched a lot of saw in my teens and it didn't phase me, now as an adult im torn. I would be interested in seeing sSaw in the cinema because I feel it would be interesting to see audience's reaction but just can't stomach the torture porn anymore

ShatParp · 02/10/2023 17:23

YANBU OP! I haven't been able to watch horror films since having kids for some weird reason and I used to LOVE it! I read an article recently about how watching something scary is good for mental health funnily enough!

Iwantitidontwantit · 02/10/2023 17:26

Haha OP same here but I do watch them, as now have a long term partner again. But when he has to frequently work away, I very much regret my viewing choices!

BarleySugars · 02/10/2023 17:28

When i was a teen i was fine with horror but late thirties now and cant even tolerate a tense thriller!!! Good vibes only 😎

GreyCarpet · 02/10/2023 17:30

Oh how I long for a return of the days when I was actually scared by a horror film!

I love nothing more than sitting in the house, on my own, in the dark and being really creeped out by a film. Properly scared. Too scared to go to the toilet so you briefly consider using the teapot scared 😅

Doesn't happen often nowadays though <wistful sigh>

I am going to see Saw X though. And the new Exorcist film and The Nun 2 because I still live in hope...

justcantgetenough · 02/10/2023 17:36

I don't like jump scare horror but found Saw X not scary at all or gruesome enough, Think I need help! But I'm not squeamish at all and Saw is just laughable.

plumtreebroke · 02/10/2023 17:42

I think they used to be clever and interesting, now they just want to shock and are too graphic. Mind you I remember one halloween film that I watched alone at home many years ago that was terrifying, never doing that again.

Oooh what one? I can never find anything that really scares me!

I did recently enjoy Smile though, thought that was creepy!

EasternStandard · 02/10/2023 18:20

I can’t watch this stuff

Get Out and The Mist is about my level

StaunchMomma · 02/10/2023 18:32

LOVE daytime horror club!!

Defo have to watch a shit romcom afterwards tho.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 02/10/2023 18:55

I'm the same, OP. Used to love horror films but just can't anymore. The slasher types are OK, but the creepy psychological ones are too much for me now. An ex and I tried watching Insidious together and bailed after about 15 minutes (pair of woosses we are 😁). I've just tried watching "Lights Out" again and I freaked myself out just remembering it! Half way through and I thought fuck no, I'm outta here!🙄😆

I love the MrBallen videos on youtube, true life horror stories. It's about all I can manage (and only in thr daytime!)

NoNoHellaNoNoHellaNoNo · 02/10/2023 18:57

I once fell to sleep watching the DVD of The Ring. When I woke up the film had ended and it’d gone back to the title screen, which was the cursed video from the film on a constant loop….

squareyedannie · 02/10/2023 19:02

I'm the opposite. I love Horror but seem to have become immune.
The last time I was creeped out was watching Blair Witch in the cinema. I think because it was so different from anything else at the time.
