Am I being unreasonable to be concerned about toilet video trend in sons school class?

Hi guys first time poster and relatively young mum (im 22) so go easy on me if this sounds silly 🙂.
My son is in year 1 and a lot of the boys in his class are talking about "skibidi toilet" which is a series of videos on YouTube. I didn't want my son to be left out so I thought I'd check them out before letting him watch them so when his friends are talking about it he can join in.

The videos I found were so weird and concerning I didn't end up showing him them because I thought they weren't appropriate for a 5 year old, I'll post a link below. So I guess my question is am I unreasonable to think it's strange to let your year one child watch these videos bearing in mind it's about half the kids in his class watching it? Do you guys have a similar trend at your children's schools? Would you let your year 1 child watch skibidi toilet?

I wouldn't be comfortable with my child watching that. Maybe let the teacher know

Sirzy · 01/10/2023 20:46

I would mention it to school in a general raising concern way.

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 01/10/2023 20:48

What's most disturbing is that there are 3.8 million people out there who feel that clip has enriched their lives enough to make it worth posting a 'like'. Humans are so odd. And no, of course it's not appropriate for 5 year olds.

HateMyRubbishBoss · 01/10/2023 20:48

WTF that was scary!!

LizziesTwin · 01/10/2023 20:49

That would have given my son nightmares. Completely inappropriate for such young children.

B1993 · 01/10/2023 20:50

I'd inform the school... they will hopefully recap internet safety with the children and can share information with their parents about discussing online content with the children and signpost them to addition support. I suspect that not all of the parents will be aware that their children are watching the videos, which is just as concerning as the children watching itthe first place!

MidnightOnceMore · 01/10/2023 20:52

Any widespread concerns like this - rather than just one kid - I would mention to the school.

BarbaraVineFan · 01/10/2023 20:52

That is horrific for a child that age. Raise it with the school

Didimum · 01/10/2023 20:57

I’m glad you posted this. My little boy, also yr 1, has also mentioned skibidi toilet. I had no idea what it was and hadn’t looked it up. He definitely hasn’t watched it at home as we don’t allow YouTube and he hasn’t had any play dates not supervised by me. But I’m going to bring it up now!

Roseandstar · 01/10/2023 21:01

They will all be petrified to go to the toilet

TattoosAndTango · 01/10/2023 21:15

My kid is obsessed with these videos but not in a good way... she was scared the 'skibidi toilet man' would come out of the loo and made me wait outside for a week or so. Now she just talks about it a lot.

It's a shame as the original skibidi videos of the belly dancing guy were really cool, our whole family loved them.

It reminds me of the Elsagate scandal a few years back, these toilet videos seem to be deliberately aimed at young children but are incredibly unsettling and it's like they have been designed to cause nightmares.

TattoosAndTango · 01/10/2023 21:16

Anyway YANBU, these videos are horrible and i would mention it to your child's teacher x

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 01/10/2023 22:19

This is why children should not be given access to smartphones / tablets. They will instinctively seek this sort of thing out.
I definitely would have done at that age. I remember almost sorts of creepy stuff from growing up in the early 90s!

Andnowtowhatcomesnext · 01/10/2023 22:49

That one isn’t appropriate. My 11DS has seen a different one that was just a head coming out of the loo singing that song. He finds it hilarious. So, I think there are different ones. Not sure any of them are ok for younger kids, though. I just know that the link you posted isn’t the one my DC watched, which wasn’t disturbing as such, just really daft, pointless and odd. Just what 11 year old boys like!

Circumferences · 01/10/2023 22:55

That's so disturbing

JasmineButtercup · 01/10/2023 22:55

That’s really unpleasant to look at

Leah5678 · 02/10/2023 07:49

Thanks for all the comments guys

I believe episode 1 is just a toilet with a head but as the series progresses the videos get more and more disturbing. I'm assuming the kids have probably seen more than just episode 1 because they talk about it so much but idk for sure

Wtaf did I just watch. My ds 4.5 would be scared shitless if he saw that.

EthicalNonMahogany · 02/10/2023 07:54

That actually massively disturbed ME! I wouldn't let mine watch it at all.

YouTube shorts are pernicious. So many are watching them & parents don't realise it's basically a free pass to the whole horrible Internet with algorithms to make it most disturbing.

Simonutti72 · 02/10/2023 07:59

We had something similar with a clip that EVERYONE was watching that was homophobic and racist - it was designed to be silly to attract a young audience. I spoke to my twins about it as they were upset they couldn’t watch it and explained the problem. I also popped a message on the parent’s WhatsApp saying what I felt it portrayed & if they hadn’t watched it but their kids did maybe they should have a look.
It was actually a really good way in to speak about the issues.

sparkedsparkle · 02/10/2023 08:14

Unfortunately this is the norm where I'm from to. That very video, and my two children play the song on Alexa too. We're in south east of England

GuardingThedog · 02/10/2023 08:22

It’s banned in my house , it’s really disturbing and I think it would give children nightmares ??
