To think we’ve messed up re notice to marry

Posting for traffic. We get married in 25 days, eloping to Scotland

We have handed in notice to them, they have all the forms etc

We live in England. We’ve not given notice to our local registry office in our council. Have we messed up?

YABU - no it’s fine

YANBU - yes you needed to give to local registry office as well as the place you’re getting married

I live in England, got married in Scotland (I’m Scottish). We only gave notice in Scotland, you’re fine.

Have a great day!

I'm getting married in the morning - understand the stress, even with a low key do!
If you're worried, call them tomorrow am/Monday to check x

You’ve to give notice where you marry, so Scotland is it’s your legal wedding no?

caerdydd12 · 29/09/2023 22:03

My understanding is if you're marrying in England you give notice in the district you reside in, regardless of where you're actually marrying. If you're marrying in Scotland you just give notice in the area you're marrying.

I’ve been married in Scotland and England.

England you give notice in where you both live and where you are getting married. Our banns were read in three places.

As far as I recall, Scotland is just where the ceremony is taking place.

We live in England and married in Scotland. Only had to give our notice in Scotland, not where we live. Don’t worry! Have a wonderful wedding day.

Sensoria · 29/09/2023 22:24

I live in England, and got married in Scotland. DH is Scottish so I had no Scottish connections that would have made a difference.

We only gave notice in Scotland. No need to give it in England too.

hellywelly3 · 29/09/2023 23:00

We had to get a special license to marry in a different parish to where we lived.

Doggymummar · 29/09/2023 23:02

I got married abroad twice, didn't give notice in uk

noticetomarry · 29/09/2023 23:12

I thought part of the tradition of "eloping to Scotland" came about because you didn't have to give notice to get married there.

(we were married in Australia where the tradition of banns being read has not been maintained)

Or need parental consent if under 18.
