To not want to do a 51 hour week

I've recently changed jobs, but due to the payroll cut off dates I'll be waiting a bit longer to get paid.
I'm also with an agency that offers shifts as and when. In desperation, I accepted a 7pm-7am shift this evening.
I work 9-5 in the office and have over an hour commute so I will have to go straight to the shift.
Admittedly my office job isn't exactly hard work, hence why I'm now typing this!
However I didn't sleep well last night and the thought of having to go straight into the night shift is stressful. I'll get £150 for the shift, but other shifts have come up now for other days on mornings/evenings which I could have done.
Once I'm back onto full monthly pay I won't need to do this extra work. They'll not be happy with this late cancellation today, and I'll lose the £150. I'm really not sure what to do, I shouldn't have accepted it. Also despise night shifts.

I think you did agree to do the shift so you should just get on with it

FLOWER1982 · 29/09/2023 15:58

Agree, you can’t cancel this late.

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/09/2023 16:00

It's one shift yes? I think sometimes we just have to do things we don't want to do.

Petunia90 · 29/09/2023 16:03

Yeah, I guess I'll learn my lesson..

The title implies it’s a regular thing or that someone was trying to make you!
51 hours in a week occasionally is no big deal for people with no health issues. But that particular day into night shift is punishing!
I’m sorry lack of money pushed you into it.
I wouldn’t cancel because of the notice. But I hope you’re not doing anything where anyone’s safety is relying on you!

Yes I can remember having to do shifts for an agency that were really tough. I had to earn the money There was No Alternative for me. But it carried us over to better times.
I hope things pick up for you @Petunia90
