To be worried about irregular periods and TTC

Shamelessly posting in AIBU for the traffic, but I’d be really grateful to hear from any MNers with a similar experience or medical expertise.

I started tracking my periods at the beginning of this year, in anticipation of my husband and I trying for a baby next year. I’d never paid much attention to my periods previously, but believed they were regular as they start like clockwork every 28 days.

Since tracking, I’ve realised my periods are in effect “2 weeks on, 2 weeks off” in terms of bleeding. Sometimes my period lasts 10 days, sometimes as long as 3 weeks, but on average 2 weeks. The first day of my period is always 28 days since my previous “first day”, no matter how long my last period lasted.

I’ve also been doing ovulation tests for 6-8 weeks, and think one may have been positive, but am not confident as the instruction is if the two lines are equally dark or the test line is darker. At most, I’d say they might have been equally dark.

I’m certain my periods have not always lasted so long (without going into detail, because I dated a lot / was very sexually active prior to meeting my husband, and wasn’t prevented from being intimate for 2 weeks a month).

I had regular STI tests prior to meeting my husband, and have never had a positive diagnosis.

I have a copper IUD.

Has anyone had similar symptoms? Do you know the cause? Did it affect your fertility?

I know I need to arrange to speak to my doctor, but I’m struggling to find time and am not sure they’ll do much other than tell me to come back once I’ve been trying for a year! I fluctuate between imagining the worst and trying not to worry about it prior to TTC.

Hi did you speak to your GP? x

I'd get my IUD out and track my fertility after that if i were you OP.

How old are you? Have you lots of time?

I tracked my periods to speed up falling for DD, and using ovulation strips found i had an unusual pattern. iirc i had irregular periods and an unusually long luteal phase (time between ov and period) so adjusted our ttc accordingly and it worked.

There's a website called Fertility Friend which is good. It's free for the basics and helps you track your periods. You can pay an annual fee for all the bells and whistles but it's not essential. I used that and it was helpful.
