To think decorating your home for different seasons is silly

I LOVE autumn, and Christmas. So much. I understand decorating for Halloween maybe a couple of weeks before it if you’ve got kids and they’re excited to Trick or treat or they’re having parties etc. And Christmas decorations through December, fair enough

What I’ve been noticing is most homeware shops and supermarkets alike are full to the brim of autumn decor. Cushions, throws, pumpkin bedding, wall art, Halloween bath mats… the list goes on. If you were to kit your home out and make it autumnal, as pretty as it would look that’s a huge expense for items you won’t really want on display after October. Not great for the environment either. AIBU to think why??

Money.

RampantIvy · 26/09/2023 19:55

I'm far too lazy and short of money to do this, but each to their own.

Hellocatshome · 26/09/2023 19:56

If I was a millionaire I would dress the house for different seasons (not a Halloween bath mat though it would be classy and when I say I would I mean I would pay someone to do it)

Embarrassednamechangeadoddle · 26/09/2023 19:57

I don’t get it. I get some seasonal bunting, cheap decs but bathmatts, duvets etc for each event/season - I won’t buy in to that! Waste of money.

Ienjoyedthebarbiemovie · 26/09/2023 19:57

I have different wreaths for summer, autumn and Christmas. And decorate for Christmas. But I don’t have money, space or the inclination to kit out my house.

it looks very lovely so each to their own if they do do this

Same!

But where I live it’s extremely common. People have little Knick knacks for every season. Also dish towels and hand towels in the bathroom. They are reused every year, so not necessarily bad for the environment.

Halloween is especially crazy though! The outside of some houses is mad.

Caspianberg · 26/09/2023 19:57

Well I wouldn’t go that far. But most things someone could keep and bring out each Halloween couldn’t they?

I mean we bring out the same Xmas decorations every year, I also have some ‘spring’ pastel vases I use around Easter. I have just planted up planter infront of door, as I do every Autumn with stuff that survives winter.

SnapdragonToadflax · 26/09/2023 19:58

Capitalism.

Mamai90 · 26/09/2023 19:58

My sister does seasonal decorating and her house looks amazing. Most of it is homemade though, crotcheted pumpkins, Autumn/Christmas wreaths etc. She has picked up some bits in charity shops over the years too though. I'm always envious of how good it looks but I don't have the time or energy to do it.

telestrations · 26/09/2023 19:59

I get it. It's a way to welcome the changing seasons and passing of time and ward of the winter blues. It can make nice activities for the kids.

But I agree on the tat.

You could do this with winter/summer sets of bed linen, curtains, soft furnishings that you reuse each year. Which is what I think a lot of people use to do but for more practical reasons.

Hufflepods · 26/09/2023 19:59

If you were to kit your home out and make it autumnal, as pretty as it would look that’s a huge expense for items you won’t really want on display after October.

It’s all relative though, what you view as a huge expense might not be a huge expense for others.
As long as the items are reused over the years then it’s not a massive suitability issue any more than Christmas decorations.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 26/09/2023 19:59

It’s the only thing that makes autumn bearable to me. Seasonal flowers, autumn candles etc then when it gets closer to Halloween DH brings out the Halloween tat.

Spottymushroom · 26/09/2023 20:01

I decorate for autumn🙂

I’m a crafter so most items I have made myself. I love it and something I look forward to each year. I’ve been doing it for about 20 years now.

Blueroses99 · 26/09/2023 20:01

It doesn’t have to be bad for the environment if it’s used year after year.

FaeWings · 26/09/2023 20:02

YANBU and shops are just making their money but I am tempted by a lot of it because its pretty and I love the Autumn colours!

I do have two pumpkin decorations and some fake Autumn leaf sprigs. They are on display September through to end of November. Then they go in a carrier bag in a cupboard till next year.

The carrier bag has some equally unnecessary Easter decorations.

I also buy Autumn scented candles each year. I commit all the Mumsnet sins 😆

Oh I also do have bedding that is quite autumnal. All reds and oranges and browns but I do use it in winter too.

And if I had all the money and storage space I would probably buy more. Homey things bring me joy

Mammillaria · 26/09/2023 20:03

I expect it's something to do with feeling connected to the changing of the seasons as we would have been before modern living insulated us from much of it. Or maybe it's just instagram!

TomWambsgansSwans · 26/09/2023 20:04

You should look at Turtle Creek Lane on insta, she lives in Texas and is joyously bonkers and goes absolutely wild decorating her massive house!

It is weirdly enthralling to watch her.

Ladyoftheknight · 26/09/2023 20:07

Fuck the environment, I like my house to look nice and enjoy the seasons. Give me plastic tat all day long, life's too short to have bland houses.

People always freak out about how much money people spend on these decorations, but what else do you spend it on? Clothes, expensive meals, holidays. we all have our 'things'

GOODCAT · 26/09/2023 20:08

I don't do this, but I can see the attraction in having a cosy vibe over the cooler months and a lighter feel in the summer.

That doesn't mean most people can afford or want to do that and I wouldn't be buying anything to achieve that for environmental as well as financial reasons. We don't do Christmas decorations as we normally go to family for Christmas. However, I find that there are still some nods towards the change to cooler weather even if that is just getting a blanket out in the cooler weather and having a thicker duvet on the bed and having cold weather gear hanging up by the door.

CyberCritical · 26/09/2023 20:09

I love that they have Halloween themed homewards like bedding and rugs but only because I see it as year round decor and completely my style. My living room rug has sugarskulls, I hot of it from Asda a few years ago, my kitchen curtains are Mexican day or the dead style cats and dogs.

But yeah really wouldn't ever be bothered enough to change my decor seasonally.

LookingForPurpose · 26/09/2023 20:09

My kitchen is Halloween themed all year long. I love it so I keep it up. I also have a Halloween tree which is basically silver spray painted branches with home made painted plaster of Paris ornaments and £ shop lights.

Niinja · 26/09/2023 20:12

Someone thought to sell the stuff and people buy it.

I am with you in spirit, I even get grumpy about Christmas duvet covers etc, but I do love my friend's autumn leaves door wreath. It makes me smile every time.

Are you imagining people throw away pillows, bedding, bath mats, etc., every year? It's not bad for the environment if they use it for years.

Ffsnotaconference · 26/09/2023 20:15

I would bet most people spend money other would consider a waste. I bet most people buy stuff other would consider tat.

I love decorating for seasons. Because it makes me happy. I don’t think. Any of my things are Tat. And I used them year after year. Gorgeous glass pumpkins, from a local small business, one that was crocheted by a dear friend, different coloured throws and so on.

I don’t buy stuff and throw it out never to be used again.

I do it because it brings me joy. It makes me happy it makes me smile. Like nice books make me smile. Or a new pretty mug makes me smile. Why would you even have an opinion, on someone doing something in their own home for their own enjoyment?

People do these thing because they enjoyment. Don’t get the thinking that you need to have an opinion on it tbh.

FoodFann · 26/09/2023 20:15

Different tat from China for every season!
