I'm in Italy, it's almost 1am and I am leaving in the morning to catch a flight but the neighbour still has the TV on.

Isnt this against normal social etiquette?!

I think it's a husband and wife and haven't heard the wife's voice for hours but hear the husband's occasional grunt, so assume he's watching and she's asleep.

Would you knock the door? Obviously I'd likely wake the wife but how will I sleep! My biggest fear is they've both fallen asleep with it on, then I've got no chance. The walls are thin.

Is it a hotel with a reception?

If so, tell them and they'll sort it.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/09/2023 23:49

call reception

EvilElsa · 24/09/2023 23:49

I'd ring reception who can contact them.
Maybe they've both nodded off with the TV on.

Rookie93 · 24/09/2023 23:56

Call reception and let them sort it out for you.

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/09/2023 23:59

Call receptioni and let them deal with it

Celia24 · 25/09/2023 00:17

No luck. I'm quite angry now as I know I'll be completely shattered tomorrow.

It's a small hotel. I went to reception and it was closed despite saying 24h online. I phoned and the Italian woman said sorry my English isn't good, can you write a message so I can translate. Asked me to write her on Whatsapp.

Guess what? The hotel isn't on Whatsapp! So I've text but certain nothing will happen.

And I'm too scared to put ear plugs in in case I miss my flight. There's every chance that could happen anyway if I don't sleep because my brain often sleeps through alarms when I'm sleep deprived.

I really feel like banging the door.

Go ahead.

ilovesooty · 25/09/2023 00:20

You'll have to knock the door by the sounds of it.

Celia24 · 25/09/2023 00:22

I really don't want to because as a young woman travelling you never know what you're going to get in the other side.

But the alternative is I have to put up with this all night. It's like a cinematic experience, clearly the walls are too thin but ivw never stayed in a hotel where a TV is on at this time.

I’d put something on my phone to drown it out eg white noise or music

Deathbyfluffy · 25/09/2023 00:23

You’re either going to have to knock on the door or just put up with it I’m afraid - there’s not a whole lot else you can do.

RJnomore1 · 25/09/2023 00:26

Do you have no way to contact reception? Email, phone, nothing?

HerAvatar · 25/09/2023 00:26

Could you bang on the wall instead of the door OP? Slightly cowardly alternative but might alert them that they're disturbing people without you having to confront them.

She's tried that.

WhateverMate · 25/09/2023 00:29

You'll have to knock on the door or put up with it then.

Celia24 · 25/09/2023 00:30

@HerAvatar avoided so far because it's passive aggressive as you say.

I'll hate doing that but at least I'd be doing something. If I go and knock the door I'll probably also disturb the 4 other surrounding rooms.

Bang on the wall and shout - Per favore, silenzio

Celia24 · 25/09/2023 00:32

Oh I just heard snoring! Supports the fallen asleep theory...

She's tried that.

To be fair, shes whatsapped not emailed?

LardoBurrows · 25/09/2023 00:36

I'd bang on the wall and shout - Shut the fuck up - it's worked for me before.

VWT5 · 25/09/2023 00:38

Tried and tested -
Go into the corridor and look for the room number.
Come back to yours and dial the number.
If you are alongside them, lie and say that you are above/below them and can they turn volume down - it’s keeping you awake.
They won’t look at you suspiciously in the mornimg…

Celia24 · 25/09/2023 00:41

I knocked really loudly and they turned it off. I would call it a rage knock. Now they're full of chatter no doubt having woken up. At least I have a chance of sleeping now.

@LardoBurrows you're a brave soul. Kudos to you!

I did that in a hotel abroad once. It worked.

LardoBurrows · 25/09/2023 00:56

Well done Op, hope you manage to get some shut eye now,
