To contemplate moving to Duffryn, Newport

Moving to south east Wales for work. This area is apparently served by a large Asda and is near a large park?

Any Welsh MNers can say yay or nay?

Ah thank you - my friend used to work there - looks like it's in a woodland area

@Supersundaylive someone I knew bought a house there that was a new build, the house is tiny, but a huge back garden, she too was by the Asda and she’s not far from Tredegar house.
Points I noticed when I visited
lot of antisocial behaviour with teenagers
A lot of people smoking weed openly in the area the smell was everywhere
I walked past quite a few people that seemed to be off their faces quite early in the morning I’m talking from 9am
There’s crime there also as in people’s cars being taken off their drives (there was an attempt on the person I knew who lives there, with her car and she had to have a door bell cam installed)

@Supersundaylive I think there are some quiet pockets but not sure where these would be

Oh blimey !! Seems good on paper but thanks so much for sharing this!!

A resounding Hell No!!! Newport is an utterly dump generally and Duffryn is grim. If you have to move to the area you want Bassaleg, Caerleon and ridgeway. That's a big HAVE !

StunningBombshell · 24/09/2023 10:48

I live close by and regularly work in and near Duffryn. There is a rough estate, but also nice areas and new builds on the other side, opposite the big Asda. I’ve never seen anything untoward- although I don’t actually work in the rough estate bit.

It’s just outside Marshfield which borders cardiff and is lovely. It’s also very near the Royal Gwent hospital which is handy.

Same as any area, nice bits and not so nice bits which can easily be avoided.

Alloftheusernamesaretakenn · 24/09/2023 10:49

It’s a shit hole. The new build (now about 20-30 years old!) Hovis homes opposite the Asda are OK but have crap noise insulation, and you get a lot of people from the surrounding areas coming into the estate to steal things.

If you need easy access to the M4 then look at the Bassaleg/Rogerstone/High Cross/Ridgeway areas.

I know the area quite well, albeit from 20 years when I went to the high school.

You couldn't pay me to live on the main estate (Street names are birds such as Swallow). The newer estates I'd consider, but I'd honestly want to be as far from the estate as possible.

I've had my nails done regularly at houses on the newer estates (areas such as Grosmont Way) and it is much quieter.

tokennamechange · 24/09/2023 11:25

my friend lives near there and likes it.
I think as others have said, there are bad areas and fine ones. I've been quite a few times to the streets near tredegar house and the business park (Sir Briggs Ave and the ones opening off it) and it's always been really quiet, houses all nicely maintained etc.
Have a look at the crime stats, it should be quite easy to spot which streets are dodgy and which are okay.

If you have dc then catchment area is a big deal - getting into Bassaleg is hard, so you'd want to be literally on the doorstep. I wouldn't want my kids in Duffryn tbh.

Thank you all for your responses! @Dmsandfloatydress - I actually love Caerleon so it's great you've mentioned it - went for a pub meal there - cozy and lovely !
