Trying to work out if I'll use one. I did years ago but now I make do with a pro max iPhone but keep getting drawn back to the iPad

And Air or normal one?

I have an android tablet and use it for watching stuff.

olderbutwiser · 20/09/2023 14:47

iPad; mumsnet, kindle, Facebook, newspaper. Sometimes emails. Sometimes messaging including whatsapp. Occasional FaceTime/teams. Couldn’t manage without mine really.

WotNoUserName · 20/09/2023 15:17

I was satisfied with my phone for many years and wondered what the point of an iPad was. Then my mum gave me hers, and I was converted.

It's not tiny like a phone! I much prefer typing on my iPad, especially on Mumsnet (and emails etc)

Now I'm older and need reading glasses it's much easier to read things on my iPad, I have the kindle app so read books as well (though I still prefer real books)

I like watching tv or YouTube on it as well, and it was the best during lockdown for using zoom or teams, I can't imagine staring at a tiny phone screen for that!

Aprilx · 20/09/2023 15:19

I use my phone for telephone calls.

I use my iPad for pretty much everything I do online.

towriteyoumustlive · 20/09/2023 15:19

I got rid of the iPad and got a Samsung tablet instead which is way better.

Even the kid's Lenovo tablets were better than my iPad.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 20/09/2023 15:19

Reading, mostly.

lap90 · 20/09/2023 15:24

Basically as a portable TV and to have sheet music on.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/09/2023 15:24

Everything online that doesn't require it to be a phone. My hands are small so I don't want a big phone and even the larger ones are still poxy little screens. If you're typing in text the remaining space above the 'keyboard' is tiny. So much better to have a bigger screen.

ClarkWGreaseball · 20/09/2023 15:29

I'm just so used to my iPhone and deliberately have the largest one to try and not have an iPad.

But I keep thinking about it as I do sometimes struggle to actually
Bloody see stuff on my screen #blind

Internet surfing, ebooks, reading magazines, listening to podcasts, watching Netflix, playing games. I have quite a big smartphone but I don’t find it big enough for reading.

eurochick · 20/09/2023 16:31

I use mine for everything. Newspaper subscription, kindle, email, photo editing, social media and MN of course.

JaceLancs · 20/09/2023 17:01

iPad Air
bigger screen much better for reading online papers, surfing internet, mums net etc
watching tv and YouTube
I am away at the moment for a short city break and synced my kindle app so I didn’t need to bring both
just been looking for where to eat out tonight and even the map makes more sense on a bigger screen
At home if Im online clothes shopping I prefer the larger images for detail

Pashazade · 20/09/2023 17:17

Use it at home constantly, certainly prefer it to my phone for any screen time that is longer than a few minutes. Don't use it for streaming stuff often unless travelling, but do use it for YouTube, playing digital versions of favourite board games, magazines, email and Mumsnet obvs!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 20/09/2023 17:23

I use mine at home, for everything. I also have an old iPad mini that I use in the kitchen as a cookery book with the kindle app.

Malbecfan · 20/09/2023 17:32

I play in different orchestras and now have all my music on an iPad Pro. I have a bluetooth foot pedal to turn the pages. It is honestly a game-changer. I am always at the back or side of the stage where the lighting is the worst and instead of having to lug around a stand light whose batteries always conk out at the most inopportune moments, I have my backlit iPad. I have all the music for each concert in a setlist and during rehearsals I annotate it with bowing and other performance directions with an Apple Pencil.

Next step is to scan in all my music for teaching my instrument so I only need to carry the iPad as opposed to loads of books & accompaniments. One of my colleagues wheels a sports bag full of music EVERY day. I don't think I could manage that along with my instrument whereas the iPad and pedal fit easily into a backpack.

RuthW · 20/09/2023 17:39

Only thing I use mine for is watching tv.

Owlcat42 · 20/09/2023 17:58

I bought it for travelling/holidays but I use it daily as well as my phone and laptop. I like how I can have eg the news on or the radio but carry it round the house with me.

Igmum · 20/09/2023 18:15

IPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. It has now replaced my laptop for work travel (after my laptop's battery died after one hour of wait at an airport and there was nowhere to charge it up - my pockets are always rammed with phone chargers so an iPad doesn't have the same downside and also doesn't die after an hour).

Work - generally emails and reading documents on it rather than writing anything.

Play (yes, yes it is mainly for play) watching films/TV, reading Mumsnet and replying to posts (doing that now), random internet surfing. I also have an iPhone Pro Max but the even bigger screen of the iPad is great
