Fart etiquette

When I am sharing a bed with my friend and one of us has a gaseous exchange he likes to grab the top of the duvet and disperse the odour by wafting the top of the duvet about vigorously. I feel that just brings the scent more directly into my face, which is not my preference. I would like him to stop. I feel that leaving the scent trapped under the duvet is the more effective way to deal with flatulence.

The weekend takeaway is just around the corner, so I really need to settle this matter of fartiquette as a matter of urgency.

YABU? He should be allowed to waft the duvet to his hearts content.

YANBU? The duvet should stay in situ until the danger has passed.

Any alternative suggestions on how to deal with this matter would be gratefully received.

You have to let it put or it just keeps creeping out and smell stays longer.

I mean… not farting in the bed feels best, but if it happens, surely discreetly opening the side of the quilt to let the smell disperse is the answer? That way it’s not in anyone’s face, but also not left to fester under the duvet…

This thread is making me chuckle! Me and DH had this conversation just the other night, I might have accidentally wafted the covers upwards and agree it was not a good move, strong but went quickly, he doesn't move the covers when he farts and it just stays around for an age! We agreed in future to do as above and let it out the side of the duvet 😂

As a side note - this is refreshing (🤔) to me as I never once farted in front of my previous DH for 17 years!

My poor DH got to know me and the effects of IBS before we were even married. I would have run! It hasn't gotten better with age either. The farts have a mind of their own and walking, coughing, sneezing laughing are all triggers for them to become free.

😂 better out than in! I had years of feeling bloated and having trapped wind because my exDH would have been mortified if I'd farted in front of him. Farting freely is so liberating So long as you use the correct waftage option 😂

I taught young children.
For some activities they would sit on the floor in front of my chair.
On occasions - yes, you've guessed.
One or two would start sniffing, waving their hands in front of their noses. The reaction would spread through the class. They would look in the direction the waft had come from so I would have an idea of where the culprit was sitting, even if not the exact child. But whoever the perpetrator was, they would always look innocent.
Small children can be remarkably powerful.

Definitely pull the covers over his head.

Irridescantshimmmer · 16/09/2023 16:39

Spray him with an air freshner.

It will be soooooo cold, he might not want to share his farts with you again.

Sneezingmywaythroughsummer · 16/09/2023 16:43

Your both wrong, you kick up the bottom of the sheets with your feet to release the fart away from your faces

isthesolution · 16/09/2023 16:50

Or just go to the bathroom?!

I don’t know why people have so little self control.

I save all my wind up for the weekend and the release it all safely, in a locked bathroom, away from others. It’s a deeply satisfying moment.

Good trick if you can do it!
