What is going to happen with the housing and homelessness crisis?

How will this be solved - will more councils start building new social housing?

Will there be a flood of Airbnb properties onto the market (as they become less profitable) that will push rents down a bit?

This isn't anything new..... so not much will happen, it's been an issue for years!

Labour will get in, build new houses/set up schemes to eradicate homelessness. They'll be in for at least 2 terms. Then the Tories will get in, in about 10 years, make loads of cutbacks and we'll have another housing/homelessness crisis. Then Labour will get in again...

It's the same cycle. I remember so many homeless people, dirty streets and tonnes of crime when I was growing up in the 80s and early 90s. Then as an adult homeless almost disappeared in the 2000s. Now homelessness is worse than I've ever seen it!

I hope councils will increase taxes on second homes. AirBnBs will be regulated. Small scale landlords will sell as letting becomes less profitable. Empty investment properties will be required to be inhabited.

But there will still be a shortfall because fewer people are living together as couples, and we have a constant stream of new arrivals (legal and illegal) who need housing too.

And no, councils won't build many more. They are struggling to cover their statutory duties as it is.

I think it has deteriorated pretty rapidly in the last few years. Was so shocked when I was recently back in my old university city, the numbers of street homeless were huge.

@VeronicaSawyer89 yes you're probably right that it is cyclical, very depressing.
