How many cm tall is your 3 or 4 year old?

Looking at car seats and lots say up to four years/105 cm… my child is still a baby and already 80cm? Does growth suddenly slow down? Seems odd otherwise? Thanks

Between 3 and 4 DS barely grew at all. He then shot up in the past 6 months and is 115cm at 4.5. Very much depends on the child I think.

UndercoverCop · 15/09/2023 13:25

DS is 4.5 and 117 cm he is visibly taller than most of the children in his reception class. I think some children grow steadily and others have more noticeable spurts

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 15/09/2023 13:25

104 is 50th percentile for boys age 4. Both my children grew out of 105cm seats by 3.5. I had an extended rear facing 25kg seat for this reason.

TheGirlWhoLived · 15/09/2023 13:26

My 2 year old is 95cm he’s 3 at the end of January but I’m certain he’ll be out of the car seat before long!

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 15/09/2023 13:27

DS hit 110cm in about May, when he was 4 years 6 months old. He'll be about 114cm on his 5th birthday next month.

Ihaveoflate · 15/09/2023 13:30

My daughter has just turned 4 is around 100cm.

SnapdragonToadflax · 15/09/2023 13:31

My son's 4.5 and only 101cm. He's definitely one of the smallest in his class and still too small for the next size up car seat.

lookingforanswrra · 15/09/2023 13:31

@Paddingtonsmarmlade thanks, which one please?

My DS was measured when he was 4yr 2m, and was 105cm, which is in line with the 50th centile so average height of a 4 year old. We have a 25kg ERF seat as he was always a high centile boy, but his growth has slowed now.

PassMeTheCookies · 15/09/2023 13:32

We have an Axkid Minikid 2.

Mountainhowl · 15/09/2023 13:34

Mine is 4 in march, so 3 and a half, he is 98-100cm (hard to measure a wiggler!)

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 15/09/2023 13:34

Axkid minikid I bought it through incarsafetycentre, they're very good at giving advice over email as I'm miles away. Great seat.

TheBirdintheCave · 15/09/2023 13:37

My nearly 3 year old is already a metre tall 🤦🏻‍♀️ I think we're going to have to reassess his car seat situation soon.

labamba007 · 15/09/2023 13:49

DS is 4.5 and very tall at 130cm

cadburyegg · 15/09/2023 13:50

They do slow down. My dinky 5.5yo is 108cm

Stripeypyjamas · 15/09/2023 13:51

My dc has poor growth and is just 100cm at 4.

BertieBotts · 15/09/2023 17:56

Yes, their growth slows down hugely after about age 1 and even further after age 2.

Think about clothing sizes - they go through about 4 sizes in the first 6 months, then 2 sizes between 6-12 months, then 1 size every 6 months, then 1 size every year. It's similar with overall growth :)

80cm is very tall for a baby though, so I would agree to look at the Swedish type seats like Axkid Minikid, Besafe Stretch, Britax Max Way etc. You'll only end up buying one later and then kicking yourself that you didn't get one like that in the first place! You normally need to buy them from ERF specialists or online. If you buy online, make sure you're confident with fitting the seat following youtube videos, as they are a little bit more complicated than isofix (and the only isofix ones are ££££).

Assuming baby means under 1, it's likely that he will outgrow the 105cm limit seats by around age 3 which is a bit too young to move to a high backed booster seat. If he's more like 18 months now, then you might be OK.

Yellowlegobrick · 15/09/2023 18:02

Its much more complicated. My DC is v short & slim age 4 (complicated health/growth situation) but her legs especially are short rather than her torso, and she finds the 5 point harnesses uncomfortable in a grp 1 seat and is much more comfortable in a HBB.

My older DC was v tall, especially in the torso, and couldn't fit in group 1 past about age 3 and a bit.

SunshineLollipopsRainbow · 15/09/2023 18:03

3y 9mo 105cm

Yellowlegobrick · 15/09/2023 18:11

DS is 4.5 and very tall at 130cm

Thats exceptional- almost concerningly so. Worth a mention to the GP & keep an eye on it.

Caspianberg · 15/09/2023 18:16

Ds is 100cm. He’s 3year 4 months. He’s still in his swivel 0-4 year maxi cosi seat. His legs are much longer than torso I think so he still fits fine.
He was a tall baby. Flew through sizes the first year. But as others said he slowed down a lot after around 1 year. Then after 2 didn’t really have a large growth spurt until
recently.
