To be concerned by the number of attempted sign-ins to my email!

I just went on my email and had to sign in again. That's unusual so I went into security to check I wasn't signed in anywhere else (thankfully not), but I've found that there have been multiple attempts not only today but every day to get into my account. Is this normal or should I be concerned? My email is an older Hotmail one and quite generic too, think FFumarate2023@hotmail. I get at least 20 spam emails a day as well so I'm guessing my email is floating around on the dark web. I've actually been in the process of switching to a different email provider as I was sick of the spam but I think I'll try and get everything moved ASAP!

I think there have been loads of these attempts over the past week. A friend and I have had rather a lot too and we’re in different countries.

I've had a load of these as well. Same number as you.

There's a site you can use to check to see if your email has been compromised. I think mine was harvested from the Adobe hackers.

The emails are a pain in the arse, I suppose that's what they're trying to do!

MumDadBingoBlueyy · 11/09/2023 20:51

I had this, I put on a 2 tier verification and haven’t had a problem since 😊

FLOWER1982 · 11/09/2023 20:51

How do you check this?

coxesorangepippin · 11/09/2023 20:51

Does someone have access via a tablet/device??

How do you check this?

If you go to settings and then click on 'Security' which will drop down and then click on 'see signed in activity'

Ok thanks for your responses, glad it's not just me. My email address has been involved in 8 data breaches, no wonder 🙄

I get a lot of this too with my old Hotmail account. I'm regularly getting verification codes to another email account which I ignore obviously as it wasn't me. I tried to look up if there was something you could do to stop it but it just says to ignore the attempts

mauveiscurious · 11/09/2023 20:59

I dumped Hotmail for outlook. It was a pain but I have a single email address to sign in and then a few more for shopping etc which enhances security

Escapingtherealityoflife · 11/09/2023 21:01

I have the same issue ever since I placed an order on what I thought was a legit site which turned out to be dodgy. I have repeatedly blocked and reported but it’s a nightmare.
I can see why people have one email for correspondence and one for shopping.

Escapingtherealityoflife · 11/09/2023 21:02

Hotmail is outlook now.

The site to check which breach your email was disclosed in is https://haveibeenpwned.com

Can you turn on 2 factor authentication with hotmail? If you can, you should.
They'll crack your password eventually. Or move to a different provider who offers this protection.

They do it to try to get access to other sites and services you use (because the username is usually your email address and they only need the password then) or to scam the people in your contacts list / address book by appearing to be you.

You can learn a lot about a person from their email. Where you shop, your banks, all sorts.

And definitely, definitely dont use the password for your hotmail on any other site. Change it now if you do. A good strong password is three random unrelated words strung together with some numbers and symbols thrown in. A minimum of 12 characters.

Have I Been Pwned: Check if your email has been compromised in a data breach

Have I Been Pwned allows you to search across multiple data breaches to see if your email address or phone number has been compromised.
