Somebodies sexuality is none of our business

Creating a thread about it probably undermines the point but I've just seen the speculation and accusations swirling around online about a certain ex presidents sexuality and it has really annoyed me. What he may or may not get up to in the bedroom (with other consenting adults) is nothing to do with us, is it?

Why is press like this so readily accepted? What on earth does his bedroom habits have to do with us? Just why is this news?

AIBU to think that unless there is exploitation or an abuse of power going on then the media should just mind their own damn business?

I’ve no idea who you are referring to, however if said president was married then most of American (assuming it US) will judge. Unless you’ve forgotten the whole Clinton - Lewinsky saga.

INeedAnotherName · 09/09/2023 00:30

People want to know so papers etc print it. They wouldn't bother paying the paps, the "journalists", the insiders if nobody read it. We can only blame ourselves.

MintJulia · 09/09/2023 00:32

It would be relevant if that person's policies and voting record were not supportive of the LGBT community.

Hypocrisy is dishonest and a betrayal.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 09/09/2023 00:39

Well if said president is married and presenting a wholesome 'wife and two kids, go to church on Sunday and let's chuck the gays out of the military' vibe to the electorate while simultaneously having seventeen same-sex relationships, obviously that is rank hypocrisy and in the public interest. IF TRUE.

If you're talking about the guy with no teeth who claims he's Obama's bottom - that is pure bobbins and no decent news editor should be going anywhere near him. But the US media is fucking nonsense - the right to free speech doesn't mean giving everyone a platform.

oynix · 09/09/2023 00:41

It's not news, it's a Qanon-esque conspiracy that no one with more than a single braincell believes.

The same could be said about the UK. The British tabloids are no better but people believe its nonsense while not noticing the many settlements they have to pay out due to their lies.

determinedtomakethiswork · 09/09/2023 00:55

Is someone seriously suggesting that Obama is gay?

LaviniasBigBloomers · 09/09/2023 01:03

@phoenixrosehere 99.9% of the time I would agree with you on that, but if the OP is referring to who I think she is, no British media editor would give them the courtesy of replying to their email, let alone interviewing them. It's so clearly nonsense and aimed squarely at the Trump base.

MysteryBelle · 09/09/2023 01:44

It is relevant if the person presented himself as faithfully married and a devoted family man as part of his political persona.

What we know for a fact is true is that Obama wrote a letter to his girlfriend when he was younger and told her he “makes love to men daily but only in the imagination” and a bunch of other things. The letter and the woman he wrote it too are easily looked up online. It is authentic.

Do I believe the guy in the interview the other night? He has no proof. And why would a married politician give a random gay hookup his real name? It doesn’t make sense. It could be that it was someone who looked like him and then he made up the rest. He’s been saying this for many years, he gave a press conference at the time, so it’s sort of old news. But, who knows. Nothing anyone does would surprise me at this point.

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2023 01:56

Is it Trudeau?

Georgie743 · 09/09/2023 03:21

Gosh it annoys me when sexuality is referred to as 'what goes on in the bedroom'. As a gay woman, my sexuality isn't the sex I have. It's my marriage. My family. Who I am. Really shits me when the old 'what goes on behind closed doors' is trotted out.

ISeeMisledPeople · 09/09/2023 03:42

There's been so much crap said about the Obamas, him being gay is honestly one of the least offensive - even if it was true, the only people that it should affect are his family.

Anyone else that is giving this head room - do you honestly not have anything more important in your own life to be getting on with?

IncompleteSenten · 09/09/2023 04:00

Is this from the same geniuses who insist Michelle Obama is a man? 🤦

TheWayofBeing · 09/09/2023 10:02

It's called 'public interest'. I'd be quite glad to discover there had been a Bi/gay president.

Donotshushme · 09/09/2023 12:07

So what if he is gay? He presents himself as a family man .. aren't gay people part of families too? The only person entitled to an opinion is his wife.

NoPazuzu · 09/09/2023 12:10

Yeah, probably the same charmers who think he was born in Kenya too.

Thepeopleversuswork · 09/09/2023 12:15

If you mean the Obama “story”, the guy making the claim has about as much credibility as Putin when he claims not to order assassinations. It’s stirred up by the right wing conspiracy industry and the guy is a con artist.

That aside; it’s not as clear cut as you suggest. It’s true that someone’s sexuality isn’t relevant to their capabilities as a public servant, of course.

But It is in the public interest if someone had been elected on the basis of a public image which is completely manufactured.

If they have misled the electorate and their family on who they are that affects their relationship with the truth and that’s something people have a right to know.
