Inspired by some threads on here, I really feel for single people who are also on low wages with maybe other issues going on which may impact on work etc.
The COL is so high now that if you don't have a partner or a wealthy family, then it is incredibly hard to make your own way especially if you live and work in an expensive area.
I read so many threads where the OP is told to just move out or LTB but in reality and in these times, that is clearly much easier said than done.
If I hadn't of met DH, I wouldn't have been able to afford to live alone in London and to move away would have meant leaving my job, friends and family. I feel sorry for people trying to make their way now and wish it was easier. In many ways I feel we are going backwards in this country.

You're not wrong. The news is full of Birmingham's bankruptcy. Won't be long before the whole bloody country follows suit. Fire Sale for the UK. We'll have to sell the Royal Family aqnd all the palaces. Seriously, if we dont get rid of this government soon there are many people who will never recover from the abuses inflicted on them. Utterly shameful.

Royalbloo · 05/09/2023 18:54

How do you know what you'd have done if you hadn't met your DP.

Sorry if this is missing the point completely but when you have no one else to rely upon, it sure puts a rocket up your bum to get a good job.

Speaking as a single mum who worked full-time and completed a Masters (MBA) in lockdown and has now got a very well paying job.

Royalbloo · 05/09/2023 18:55

What would you do without DH? Could you support yourself?

Also 100% agree with this.

Many people work hard but don't earn well. It's not always easy to walk into high paid jobs either.
I know many people who went to uni who are probably earning what they would have done without.

It's not possible for everyone though is it? Well Done you though.

I am a single parent and a carer to one of my dc, it is hard, much harder now then when I first became a single parent.

I agree that it makes it very hard for people to leave potentially abusive relationships. It’s very hard to work a low paid job and afford child care especially if you have no family support.

TinaTeaspoons · 05/09/2023 18:59

Honestly I don't think I could and I work. Not in a great paid job but even so.
I wouldn't have the lifestyle I do now without him and our joint earnings, no. Most of my social circle are the same. Some of the wives are SAHM and completely dependent on their partners. A good number would still be living at home or struggling to rent.
I know someone who is a morning TA. She wouldn't have the lovely house she has now without her DH. A TA's wage would buy you a nice cardboard box in London.

Maybe not but at least 65% of the people who started my course dropped out, and it was free (funded by the apprenticeship levy). There are opportunities out there to further your career and earn more if that's a necessity - it was for me.

What magic wand do you think a Labour government are going to wave to make everything warm and fuzzy?

coffeelateperson · 05/09/2023 19:15

I have kept thinking the same. And I also think that how do the couples with small children afford to live with single income too.
I find it hard for us me and husband both earned decently, as no children.

newnamethanks · 05/09/2023 19:34

Well Titicaca I think any new government is going to find it a hell of a job, no matter what political flag they're flying. However, my hope is that, whoever they are, they will make some effort to improve things. However, the possibility that your asset-stripping, pocket filling Tory mates will have left the coffers completely denuded is more than likely so I'm not expecting the warmth and fuzziness you've dreamed up in your fantasy. I am hoping that there will be a less toxic collection of ill-intentioned poltroons, chancers, sleight of hand merchants and liars than that which comprises the current incarnation of the Tory Party. Here's hoping.
