To think this British film is a figment of my imagination?

Posting here for traffic but there is a part of me that wonders if I have dreamt up this film as i've searched for it on 2 film search forums and googled the synopsis repeatedly but have never found it. Also posted about it in Chat on here, but only a few responded and no matches.

So...watched a British film around 2011 and have tried searching for it a few times but have never managed to find it.
Some details may not be accurate and my memories are vague and patchy, but the gist is: Romcom. Group of friends. Two friends are practising to perform a surreal, out-of-water synchronised swimming act at a festival (think it might be Fringe Festival although not totally sure.) There is another couple and the guy plays a fiddle in a band. He ends up sleeping with a mutual friend. I think there is a scene where the guy and the friend he sleeps with share some wine in a bar and I think I remember Portishead playing.

The film may have either been filmed in the 90s or set in this decade from my vague memory of music, clothes and interiors of one of the friend's apartment, which i remember being quite arty.

At the end of the film, there is a marriage and i think that it emerged that the friend who is sleeping with the guy in the band is pregnant.

That's all i have and really hope someone can help as I'm really craving to watch it!

I think if it was filmed in the 90’s (or at least the early 90’s) I would have heard of it as I was in quite a big synchronised swimming club then an we had sleepovers and movie nights regularly- one of us would have found it in Blockbuster and shared it undoubtedly thinking the tenuous link hilarious!

I am interested to see if there is such a film though as many of us girls still meet up regularly for weekends away so we could have a cocktail night and watch it…

The synchronised swimming bit was more of a comical performance. It was a dry act to be performed at a comedy festival I think, rather than actual synchronised swimming. If i remember rightly, the two women in the act were sisters and one really didn't want to do it a d the other was really passionate about the act. So it wasn't really a film about synchronised swimming - this was just a bit of an funny/awkward bit. The film was more about messy and fun y relationships between this group pf friends. It was one of those really watchable films.

@Riverlee

Thanks for this. I've looked through the list and none of them are a match.

Maybe Festival (a film set at the Edinburgh Fringe)?

There’s a 2095 film called, I think, ‘Festival’ which is set among a group of different performers, some comedians, at the Edinburgh Fringe, but the only act I can remember is someone doing a solo play about Dorothy Wordsworth.

90sfilm · 04/09/2023 17:09

@TheGoddessFrigg Thanks but it's not that. This film was suggested in the Chat thread and thought it sounded similar. Ended up watchi g it anyway and it was a good film!

Is it the wedding one with Robert Webb and Martin Freeman?

90sfilm · 04/09/2023 17:13

@RoadLess @ApoodlecalledPenny Thank you. Of all the films this sounds like the closest match however when I was looking for the film a few years back I came across this and it isn't it. The film I am thinking of is either Scottish or Irish though. I thought it was Irish but I think the synchronised swimming act was taking palce at Edinburgh festival so not sure for certain whether it is in irish or scottish film.

Honestly no idea but it does absolutely sound like a credible 90s B-list Brit flick.

OneLittleFinger · 04/09/2023 17:23

Did you mention it on another thread recently? If not, someone else is looking for the same film.

90sfilm · 04/09/2023 21:13

@MorrisZapp Confetti? Just watched the trailer and it's not that unfortunatly.

You didn't imagine it. It's Swimming with Men from 2018

Childhoodmemories · 04/09/2023 21:26

Portishead also have tracks in "I used to be famous" and "My Mad Fat Diary" either of which might fit

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 04/09/2023 21:28

@90sfilm if you can remember a song from it you could search that and see what films it's in?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/09/2023 21:29

Swimming with Men is a great film, but that’s not the plot. Also the OP watched it in 2011 so unless she has a time machine, not possible 🤣

It is but given how sketchy and vague everything is it may not even have been 2011 she saw it 😂

TomatoSandwiches · 04/09/2023 22:49

Can you remember any actors or other things you may have seen them in?
