To consider taking child out of reception for a week for a holiday?

My DC is starting reception this week but doesn’t turn 5 until summer next year, so isn’t compulsory school age until 1 September 2024.

Does anyone know if you can be fined for taking a child who isn’t yet compulsory school age out of school for a week’s holiday? Has anyone done it?

No, you can’t be fined.

Our school didn't fine for reception but do for other school years. Not taken DD out myself but other parents in class shared this info

Do it

Not if they are under compulsory school age. They can't fine you for taking a 4 year old out of school

That's what the poster said?

Do it! I wish I had!

Near the end of school year I would, but never near the beginning of the school year. I know parents who take older ones out of school near the end of the school year & pay the fine as its a lot cheaper than paying the extortionate prices in the school holidays.

You won't get fined for taking a 4 year old out of school. We took DS out in the March/April, once he was settled.

Thank you all for your replies, I really appreciate it.

Yes, I’m thinking about booking something in June. Good point - definitely wouldn’t do it early on in the school year. DC’s 5th birthday isn’t until July.

They can't fine for five year olds either until the term after they turn five.
