Electrician tried to overcharge me

I've had an electrician in today to do some small jobs. He arrived at 10.18, chatted on the phone outside to someone for ten mins and then started work. He left the premises at 13.30 saying he was off for something to eat and returned after 14.40. He came downstairs at 17.20 and when I asked him how much I owed him he said it was 7 hours.
I've paid him for 6 hours and given the extra £10 he stated as the value of extra bits he has used.
Would you have paid him the extra hour? AIBU

He said he didn't want the extra money now but he spent time creating a list of items that were needed and reserving them. I didn't ask him to, the items were in my list anyway and I ordered and collected them anyway. I suggested he ask people if they want his procurement services in future as I neither needed them or asked for them. He said that he'd been warned not to give hourly rates but he chose to do that, I didn't ask for those terms. He expects cash in hand too. I feel a bit bad as I hate any exchange ending badly but I get paid a crap hourly rate and I pay tax on mine. He set his own terms.

I much prefer a price for a job.

I'd probably have paid because I'm crap at confrontation. Good on you.
