Help - My wedding guest dress for today locked in my wardrobe

Please help I'm going to a wedding today and my dress (a beautiful needle and thread I was really excited about wearing) is hanging neatly in my wardrobe and I can't open the door.

It's a pull push catch door - no handles. No matter what I do I can't open the door. I keep pushing it as I normally would and it should just pop open but nothing is happening.

I need to be on the way at 11am, I should be showering and doing my hair now but can't get my wardrobe open! I don't have any other smart clothes that aren't in there.

Has anyone else had this problem and how can I solve it?

Break it ?

Mmr224 · 01/09/2023 08:21

Post a photo of the wardrobe and maybe we can suggest something

Spray some WD40 on the mechanism? (carefully). Alternatively go full on The Shinning and take an axe to it!

Mmr224 · 01/09/2023 08:22

Is it a magnetic catch or a hook type thing?

ThePoetsWife · 01/09/2023 08:24

Get a crowbar

Does your Road have a whatsapp group? If so ask if anyone with odd job skills could come and help get it open.

Can you get in through the. Back of the wardrobe?

indecisivewoman81 · 01/09/2023 08:38

CAn you slide a blunt knife in and prise it open?

HowToSaveAWife · 01/09/2023 08:39

Where's the catch for the door? Like the little magnetic tab to close it on the inside of the door. Usually at the top or side - can you get something small stiff and credit card shaped and slip it in between the door and the catch - if you can disrupt the catch you'll pop it open.

Or pull the door enough to see if there's a hanger caught or something.

Knife?

This is a great idea. My son got stuck in his room once and a neighbour's handyman drove over and helped unstick the lock at no charge.

I have one of those door catches which sticks a lot. The trick is to bang/wobble it furthest from the catch where it's weaker/looser. Can you slide a hand or a butter knife in a gap?

wineymummy · 01/09/2023 08:41

Fork?

Autieangel · 01/09/2023 08:42

Something to Jimmy it like a crow
Bar

jeaux90 · 01/09/2023 08:43

Yep jimmy it. Crow bar or anything with a long length for leverage.

Whataretheodds · 01/09/2023 08:45

Sounds like something stuck in the magnet/catch. Can you unscrew the whole door?
Take a photo and post it here
WhatsApp the neighbourhood group/ call nearby friends.
Have some breakfast if you haven't already. You've plenty of time to shower

HRHTheDuchessOfBotox · 01/09/2023 08:47

Brute Force.

1990s · 01/09/2023 08:50

Ours does this - @NeedMyDress try pushing the same as you would to open normally - either higher up above the catch or lower down below and usually that works.

itsmeafterall · 01/09/2023 08:50

You need to stick something g to the front to pull it open - like a plunger for example.

If it's a spring loaded push open mechanism that should, do the trick as they shouldn't be a catch on it.

Alternatively slide in a piece of string string into the small gap on the edge of the door, from top to bottom and then slide that behind the door and pull.

Hope you get it sorted
