To ask - does anyone else have permanent worry about losing their job?

I'm worried every day about losing my job! It doesn't help that I was made redundant a few years ago, which made the fear worse. I then had to take a stressful job that was bloody awful just to stay in employment.

I worry I will get made redundant again. In my mind, I may then never be able to get another job as maybe no one would employ me, maybe only casual work if I'm lucky. But then the stress of not having a monthly salary coming would be so stressful for me to cope with.

Am I alone in this fear.

You're not alone. I've been made redundant twice in three years - not sure I'll ever feel secure in a job again!

Spendonsend · 29/08/2023 20:11

I felt like that after I was made redundant. Its very stressful.

I now have more than one job and I feel a bit more secure that I wouldnt lose them all at the same time.

It’s concerning but I’m employed by the government where they’d sooner find you a new role vs redundancy. However I started a new position recently on promotion, so I suppose the pressure is there to justify my position and not be seen as superfluous, because as the newcomer I assume I would be the first to go. I think I’m not as much worried about being made redundant, but more my team being considered redundant in the grand scheme and being disbanded

You re not alone. My husband was made redundant a few years ago, he has another job now but I’m in constant fear. Not a nice feeling is it x

I also feel like this! Coupled with feeling that as I get older no one will want to employ me.

I am an anxious person and have been made redundant. I feel such need for financial security which is weird as we had no problems growing up.

Phos · 29/08/2023 20:18

You’re not alone. I’m in a company where we seem to have restructures every two minutes. I’ve been lucky so far but am sure it will run out at some point.

My experience is quite specific so I know I may struggle to get something in a similar company and certainly not on the salary I get now.

daaaaaa · 29/08/2023 20:21

It’s just anxiety, like any other. I feel for you. It’s horrible feeling that way x

What do you work as OP?

UndercoverCop · 29/08/2023 20:29

There are lots of downsides of working in the criminal justice system. This is not one of them, unfortunately there is always more work than staff, and during economic downturns the workload increases.
What do you do OP? Would you consider changing fields?

BiscuitsandPuffin · 29/08/2023 20:30

Yes, me! I got sacked 3 days before Christmas in 2013 because they thought 8 days off in a year was too many (5 days of it were because their own HR department said I couldn't work on crutches due to health and safety). Since then, every time I have to take a day off I think I'm going to come back to a "meeting". I've even quit jobs pre-emptively due to the anxiety I get about this.

Andylippy1 · 29/08/2023 21:28

Undercover I wouldn't be too sure about your statement. I was made redundant from a criminal justice agency in 2009.budgets were cut by the then Govn and many of us were made redundant as a result.

Timeandtune · 29/08/2023 21:34

I have felt like this for my entire working life. I graduated at 19 and began working straight away .
I have worked non stop (apart from 2 mat leaves)
and am now 64.
So a lot of years spent fearing the axe would fall. It did twice and on both occasions ( cliché alert ) it turned out well for me.

Kfjsjdbd · 29/08/2023 21:35

Yes me. Always terrified. I always have been. I’ve been made redundant twice in four years and feel so insecure as a result (even though new jobs were relatively easy to find). I have no idea what the answer is.
