Cooking frozen chicken which is not suitable for cooking from frozen ...

Tesco came on Sat. I failed to notice they had substituted a frozen chicken breast joint for a chilled one so I put it in the freezer anyway.

I have got it out and its cooking as we speak. I have just been idly browsing the back of the packet waiting for the kettle and it says not suitable for cooking from frozen whatever that means.

A google seems inconclusive on whether I should still do this or not and I've almost definitely cooked chicken from frozen before.

I was planning to just cook it for longer but DS using his valuable food tech knowledge tells me this is insanity and I might (slight exaggeration) kill us all. We have an important event tomorrow we cannot be ill for so he says I should order a takeaway.

I think he just wants a takeaway ...

So our fate is in your hands .......

IANBU - keep cooking the chicken
IABU - Order a takeaway

I feel you should be able to cook a chicken from frozen, but I can’t say I know how, or that I’d do it myself. I’m a bit risk-averse with chicken. Maybe get a takeaway.

Was it thawed before you started cooking it? If not the heat can warm the middle and build up bacteria before it’s cooked through.

Forgot to say, take away.

Have you got a probe thermometer?

Frequently cook chicken breast / pieces from frozen when I've forgotten to defrost. Just give it a bit extra and check its been cooked through before serving.

Do the same with whole chickens too - just cover, lower the temp and give longer in the oven.

Not yet poisoned anyone!

If you can cook the joint you ordered from frozen then there is no reason you can't cook the one you got from frozen, you will just need to adjust the time and temperature of the oven to the settings you would usually use.

See I have cooked frozen chicken before but I think it was diced chicken and it was specifically to be cooked from frozen.

This was a chilled thingy that I've put in the freezer and no I've not thawed it I put it straight in the oven.

No probe thermometer no.

YANBU. You wont die. Make sure its heated right through though so more time in the oven. DS can have a boiled egg, that's safe enough for him.
