To ask about teen clothes brands

My nephew is 15 in a few weeks and I want to buy him some clothes. Could mums of teen boys give me some pointers as to what brands they are into? Thanks in advance.

My son likes Montitex, Nike, North Face and Berghaus for sports clothing. For smarter T-shirts Hugo Boss, D Squared and Arne. Hope that helps.

Currently Berghaus pants/ shorts & Ts, Boss jacket, ON running trainers, TNF hoodies, his mates all redress the same, it’s like a chav uniform round here. I’d be careful of anything colourful though- even in these brands it tends to be white Ts and black/grey everything else. At 15 they like to choose their own stuff so a Gift card for JD would go down well

Very much depends what he’s into in terms of music/subculture. My DS15 likes Thrasher, Vans, DC Shoe Co, Converse but he’s into skate culture and rock/punk music. He wouldn’t wear North Face or Nike because it’s not his group. Do you know what sports, music, culture (gaming, animé, etc) he likes?

XelaM · 27/08/2023 01:49

Nike, North Face, Converse

ittakes2 · 27/08/2023 02:22

North face, Tommy Hilfiger, adidas, Nike, boss

They have different fashion and style in different City's, schools friendship groups

Cash is a far better option

N4ish · 27/08/2023 05:33

Could you give him a voucher so he could choose his own clothes? At that age I think he’d much prefer to buy stuff for himself.

ActDottie · 27/08/2023 05:35

I wouldn’t buy him clothes, at that age even my own mother couldn’t buy me clothes as I’d likely hate them.

Rookie93 · 27/08/2023 06:44

Definitely get vouchers or give money so he can buy something himself. It's a complete minefield with different teen groups having specific brand preferences- often quite niche and/or obscure. Also, can still remember the horror of wearing something an 'old' person had brought for me.

KimberleyClark · 27/08/2023 09:33

I’ve asked my brother and he said to buy clothes! I have bought him a t shirt before and he seemed to like it. Either that or he is extremely well brought up and polite! But possibly cash is the best option.

Thanks for the replies.

It varies so much depending on their taste and interests. My 16-year-old is into motorsports and wouldn't wear any of the above - he lives in F1, NASCAR and BTCC merch for the teams he supports.

Sirzy · 27/08/2023 09:46

Can you send your nephew a message and ask him to send you links?

my nephews love all things Nike but I wouldn’t buy without checking with them first.

I have never managed to fathom what teen boys wear , my DS is 23 now and no style /brand preferences at all .
My DD will rattle off names /brands that she knows her classmates wear but usually says "This is my brother we're talking about " (ie a non starter )

My DS wears jeans and TShirts or Henley tops (all plain) M&S or H&M , used to be TopMan till they closed
Hoodies (bought from Amazon as I got some with zipped pockets not just kangaroo)

Levi jeans are classic - I bought some for DD , she cannot believe she's missed them all this time !

Nike trainers

If you can stand Sports Direct they do loads of brands , including Calvin Klein

Would your nephew go shopping with you ? Maybe a trip to a big shopping centre and lunch ?

LBOCS2 · 27/08/2023 10:21

We tend to go with JD sports vouchers for teens - they do a wide variety of clothes and even if they're into a more alternative subculture they sell things like Vans and Etnies. My 16yo DSS specifically asks for them so he can put it all together and buy hugely expensive trainers that we wouldn't!
