I tried it and when younger did work but now tried it again recently and I can’t stand it. I’m going back to old fashioned calorie counting next week and everyone keeps saying how bad it is and only keto/low carb is sure way to lose weight. What are your thoughts?

Didimum · 26/08/2023 18:44

Calorie counting will be effective, as long as you know your calorie output. I don’t really care too much what diets people want to follow, but I don’t think there’s enough research on keto yet for anyone to be sure about its effects. You do you.

BoohooWoohoo · 26/08/2023 18:44

I am losing weight with calorie counting. I enjoy and want to eat carbs but simply put a lot less on my plate now.

rainawf · 26/08/2023 18:45

@BoohooWoohoo hows it going? How much you lost over what time period?

Oysterbabe · 26/08/2023 18:46

The only people I know who follow it are overweight. The vast majority can't sustain it long term and just yoyo.

bellac11 · 26/08/2023 18:48

I suppose if you're mentioning/moaning about being overweight or wanting to lose weight, then people will give their opinion on what worked for them

cardibach · 26/08/2023 18:49

I’ve lost over 2 stone calorie counting.
I try to eat clean mostly too (in the sense of cooking from scratch and having loads of veg) but I’m not religious about it.

I'd really recommend that you have a read of this book which will help you to understand more about the different approaches to dieting - then you can make your mind up which way to go.

Look up insulin resistance. That's what keto aims to help. As you get older your insulin resistance is higher but in order for keto to work now as it did when you were younger you need to reset your insulin resistance with some serious fasting first to get into ketosis.

Can you give us a quick overview of the findings? What's the basic conclusion - keto or calories or is it that everyone's body prefers different approaches?

BIWI · 26/08/2023 18:54

The very basic conclusion - calorie counting doesn't work (in the longer term). You have also to consider foods that cause inflammation - specifically getting a balance between Omega 3 and Omega 6. A low carb diet is one that helps to avoid inflammation.

Very, very, very brief summary!

lljkk · 26/08/2023 18:54

Don't tell people you're trying to lose weight or what your strategy is, unless you know they'll just be 100% cheer you on regardless.

KeepYaHeadUp · 26/08/2023 18:55

Ditto on the calorie counting.

BIWI · 26/08/2023 18:56

However, @InterFactual, it's certainly true that different people respond to different approaches. This is the basis of the work that Tim Spector is doing right now on Zoe see here

InterFactual · 26/08/2023 18:57

Thanks @BIWI that's interesting. I remember a few years back there was a huge trend to eat as much omega oil as possible with little differentiation between 3 and 6. Children's gummy vitamins suddenly tasted fishy, even birds eye brought out an omega version of fish fingers. I'll have to look into this more as I did buy into the hype a bit!

And the award for stating the ruddy obvious.... 😂

YANBU if it's not for you. I am evangelical about keto/Atkins, because not only does it make you lose weight like nothing else, but it's cured all sorts of ailments I had and makes me feel alive, sharp brained and full of energy.

But I don't really give a stuff if other people want to do things the harder/slower way. I don't waste my time trying to convert anyone else, I just get annoyed with people who still try to warn me about what a terrible, unbalanced 'fad' diet it is, and how I'll die of a heart attack on it.

I’m glad it works for you. But don’t assume others who don’t do it ‘want to do it the harder way’. It doesn’t work for me. I feel like utter shit - stomach ache, headache, brain fog - and I don’t lose weight. My body needs carbs. Calorie counting works for me.

Squirrelsnut · 26/08/2023 19:04

I believe it works very well for many people, but I don't enjoy meat and I do enjoy fruit and vegetables, so I couldn't do it.
I tried it once and lost 6 lbs in a week (I wasn't even officially overweight) but couldn't bear it.

AlphaRomeoSierraEcho · 26/08/2023 19:04

My thoughts, from the people I see who are low carb/keto, is that it’s a diet they don’t do properly. I rarely see one without sky high cholesterol because they compensate lowering carbs by eating loads of butter, cream, cheese, belly pork, skin off the chicken, fat edged steaks etc.
The highest cholesterol I’ve seen is over 13, it triggered a consultant consultation. Total waste of NHS resources because some idiot was adding butter to their black coffee each day, another one was practically drinking cream and eating blocks of cheese to fill themselves up, but they all tell me they are eating as much full fat low carb stuff as they can so they don’t feel hungry.

that's what I was going to say. If you're initiating a conversation about weight loss methods people will obviously refer to whatever it is that's worked for them. If you're feeling fed up then stop having these chats and just get on with whatever it is you've decided upon.

Moonshine5 · 26/08/2023 19:08

@AlphaRomeoSierraEcho I know you weren't joking but your comments made me laugh because they're spot on for so many people I know

The point being that slim people seem to have no issue with evil carbs, almost like carbs aren't the problem...
The only weight loss approach worth considering is one you can sustain forever. If you can't then the weight will just go back on.

KajsaKavat · 26/08/2023 19:11

I’ve never done Atkins or Leto but I cut out carbs (yes fruit too) for 10 years and it helped super fast and super well so I do tell people all the time, I think people are often confused about what healthy means. Many think that a punnet of grapes is ok but the sugar content is insane, same with bananas, so if your dieting and getting nowhere peooole will want to help.

Sagedragon · 26/08/2023 19:16

For me, calorie counting is the easiest to keep up for a prolonged period as nothing is bad/forbidden as long as I have the calories left. I've lost 6st over 2 years so far, with another 2 to go.
