Should I take them up on their offer to replace this? Feel bad ...

My lovely neighbours have just had the basement level of their townhouse completely renovated. They mentioned a damp wall that just wouldn't dry out, so I offered to lend them my dehumidifier. It's a good one, a Meaco Which? best buy.
This was a fortnight ago.
Neighbour has messaged today to let me know that it has stopped working. They've changed the fuse but its lights aren't even coming on. As I said, they're lovely and have offered to replace it, but I think I'd feel a bit guilty to take them up on their offer.
It is likely that it was running 24/7 on full power in a damp, dusty environment. I've suggested that they remove any dust from the filter - and obviously the water tank has been emptied - but it's not looking hopeful if the lights are dead.
It had always worked perfectly before. I had owned it for 2 years and it is now out of warranty.
Neighbours are very rich and I am not Grin
What would you do?

Let them replace it 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheNewSchmoo · 26/08/2023 11:00

Why would you allow them to do anything other than replace your broken belonging?

MrsDBaddiel · 26/08/2023 11:01

Why feel guilty? Just say “yes, please replace it”.

Dilemmaema · 26/08/2023 11:01

Say your happy with second hand or a small wait, but you do need one

JMSA · 26/08/2023 11:01

Yeah, thanks. I just feel bad in case it was on its way out anyway, but as I said I had never had any issues with it previously.

Let them replace if

Badbudgeter · 26/08/2023 11:02

Let them replace it but let them use the new one to finish the job.

I really like this idea.

Why would you advise this? I really don’t understand some of the nonsense “advice” people give on here. That said, the op itself is nonsense.

gamerchick · 26/08/2023 11:03

Absolutely let them replace it.

JMSA · 26/08/2023 11:03

I guess a part of me wishes that they'd replace it without telling me! This would remove any awkwardness from the situation.

Just say thank you very much that’s very helpful. Don’t offer to wait or it might never materialise. Don’t offer to accept second hand as it might be faulty. Unless yours was very old. Which you have not said it was.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 26/08/2023 11:04

Yes. Absolutely. Let them use the replacement one.

EliflurtleTripanInfinite · 26/08/2023 11:04

Let them replace it but keep the new one till the damp is taken care of. They'll probably feel bad about this if you don't let them replace it, I would. Money's not an issue for them so let them do this.

JMSA · 26/08/2023 11:06

@MrsDBaddiel

Whereas your own input is so constructive.

Thanks everyone - I appreciate your thoughts.

Could you maybe suggest they pay for a repair? It might be fixable. We have a few domestic appliance repair places near me; they have repaired a few things of mine which I thought were goosed (vacuum, straighteners, washing machine etc)

Yes, I could look into that. Thank you.

"Oh it probably couldn't cope with being on all the time. Yes please to a replacement, it's this one (insert link to product). I'm happy for you to use the new one to finish the job but please don't leave it on continuously as it obviously can't handle that 😊"

Job done.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want it replaced.
