AIBU to think the Scottish Government should spend more on disability than on gender in their equality funding.

As someone whose elderly father struggles with a disability and is trying to get his home adapted I can't believe the focus of the funding has gone on Gender, I always assumed most equality funding would be on disabled people -22% of the population, many who need adaptations to their homes.

Stonewall received £415,000 during the period(2017-21) Scottish trans alliance which just seems like a political pressure group who are challenging the UK Government received £850,000 (2017-21).

I don't disagree that some funding should be allocated to trans and LGB communities and projects for women to get into stem etc but I have a feeling it's just gone to certain causes because it's fashionable and you'd have thought that they would have had more sense of responsibility to the whole community.

The amount of funding breakdown 2017 -2021

£2.5 million – Gender
£1.7 million – Disability
£0.8 million – Refugees
£0.6 million – Race
£0.3 million – Age (Including Men’s Sheds)
£0.2 million – Gypsys / Travellers
£0.2 million – Religion

YABU - I am being unreasonable
YANBU - I am not being unreasonable

OP, are you seriously expecting the SNP to make rational decisions based on needs?!
They don’t do logic. They jump on whichever trendy bandwagon is ordered by Harvie and Slater and the mad Greens. Otherwise they lose their majority in Holyrood.

Point taken, I guess it has a lot to do with keeping the Green's happy.

@molotovcupcakes I suspect it’s not just the Scottish gmt.

I think NHS trusts, Civil Service depts, Police Forces, Council’s etc. will predominantly spend their D&I budget on Gender which is not a protected characteristic in its own right. I am slightly suspicious of the number of public sector organisations with a Transwoman as their D & I lead - there seems to be a disproportionally high number or they are just more visible/promoted.

You might want to write and ask them to break Gender down into the protected characteristics of:

  • Sex
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Gender reassignment
  • Maternity & Pregnancy
Plus ask if the Gender Identity Belief is funded out of Religion and Belief PC.

Yanbu - not sure on the totals for Scotland only but by the census there are 250k "trans identified " in the UK (and I don't believe that all "trans identified" are truly "trans" ) (and this is not considering that it was established that the question was difficult/confusing for non english speakers which may have skewed the number up) but there are 14 million disabled in the UK - it seems ridiculous that the weighting in funding is Higher to trand issues than disability- but disability ain't sexy and it does not get all the teens going in tik tok - unless it is the mental health DID craze which they just love.

Only £1.7 million for disability groups in Scotland over four years? Awful.

Castform · 26/08/2023 17:56

I agree that there needs to be more funding for helping disabled people, but why does everything on here have to be about trans issues?

This is about gender identity theory not just trans. It is valid because they have used the category gender implying it’s a protected characteristic when it’s not, rather than the individual pcs such as sex. This is misleading the public on how tax payers money has been spent in proportion to all the protected characteristics and representation within each pc.

This is why we ended up with male rapists being housed in women’s prisons because the language used was disingenuous and intended to obfuscate what is happening.

@Castform @molotovcupcakes I also should have added it’s also about piss poor data collection, analysis etc. There is a trend of not doing proper data collection. There are 9 protected characteristics, lumping some together, keeping some individual, breaking some down into sub categories, and not including other pcs means the stats are useless and cannot be used to draw meaningful conclusions about value for money, impact etc. They cannot be used to inform policy going forward etc.

Was no money spent on fighting maternity and pregnancy discrimination?
